Airflow

Is it better to have a CPU cooler that takes the air from the side as opposed to having the air coming sraight down/up? I am not sure that mine is doing the job it should be. I am OC'd to 3.3GHz, and when I run prime95, I am getting temps of 78c, too hot. core voltage is 1.34.

Talking about the Thermaltake Golden Orb II ? Chances its working the wrong way are way too close to none.
Check if it's mounted properly on the CPU and you've used the proper amount of thermal paste. Does your case have a good airflow?

LOL I cant imagine you getting even that good a temps with that cooler. Consider yourself lucky.

If you wanna oc you may wanna look into getting a better air cooler.
I doubt it really matters, I guess if you want to get really really technical up/down would be better. I'm guessing that isn't the problem though and you need to reseat your heatsink. Remember, use only 1 rice sized grain of TIM in the middle of your chip. The pressure when you tighten it down will thin it out for you.

This cooler was not made to oc quads. Run them at stock sure but when you start dumbing voltage into them its not gonna handle it.

I agree. When I had my Q6600 I needed a HUGE tuniq tower to cool that and it wasnt even the best. Look into the TRUE or the Noctua in my sig and those two are pretty much the two best right now. The Tuniq is good also but it doesnt really allow for aftermarket fans. That sounds like your gonna have to stick with a 3ghz or 3.1ghz overclock with that cooler.

Thanks for all the answers, mixed bag of them, lol. I think I may have applied too much goo. I also think that I want a better cooler. Any recommendations based upon my sig? I want a good one, no more than 100 dollars though.
100 dollars on a CPU cooler? A TRUE, duh.... for dirt cheap you can buy one like mine and sacrifice like 4-5C compared to the TRUE. Save some money for a GPU

TRUE, noctua, or xigmatek depending on what you want to spend and your taste.

TRUE is currently considered the "best"

Noctua is the "silent" one and the xigmatek is arguably the best bang for buck.

I don't play any games, at least not yet. When you mention TRUE, it is Thermaltake correct? Any particular model you recommend?

Thermalright, oops. I haven't built a rig since 2002.

QFT
take your pick depending on budget

I'm surprised your Golden Orb didn't melt.

Coolermaster V8, or V12! is V12 out yet? ok i'll shut up now, but if he has 100$ burning a hole in his pocket, why not get a copper TRUE.
( i say he/his but, you get it... it better than sayin it anyway)

Not exactly burning a hole, but I want to get this build right. Since I haven't built a computer in 7 years, and I do not work in the IT field anymore, lets assume that I am a bit nieve. kpo6969, is that site trustworthy? I try to stick with newegg as much as I can. When I order the TRUE, from the looks of it, I would have to order some fans also? Anything else that I would need to order with it? I already have the bracket from the Orb. Thank you all for your time.

Yes they are but you may find cheaper elseware(?)
Newegg doesn't carry them I believe.

Performance PCs is a good company.

Also, I think the regular TRUE would work just as well.. that copper TRUE is like attaching a very heavy, conductive brick to your CPU.
No, Newegg doesn't carry them. I saw another thread with someone who has a TRUE and it is pretty big. I don't know if I can fit it, looks like it will hang over the dimms. kpo6969, any recommendations on a fan and anything else I might need for a TRUE?

Thanks a lot.

Doubt it will cause any spacing issues on any motherboard..

I think a single Noctua NF-P12 will do the trick just fine on a TRUE (Second fan is so unnecessary).

Cool, thanks for the information.
