I have been looking at all kinds of reviews and whatever information i can find and i'm really conflicted on which i should get. The price and specs are pretty much the same for each. From what i understand they both a metal body but i'm not sure about that. I think what it comes down to does the asus have better cooling than the alienware? I don't like it when laptop keys get hot under my fingers when gaming. And do either of them have a common technical problem?

You might get better information on the official threads on NBR forums.

However I like the idea of the Alienware 17 R3 because it has 2 options for external GPU's later down the road via Thunderbolt or proprietary connection

I have the Alienware R2. If I were you, I would get the base model R3, and upgrade the guts during black friday. Don't fall for the terrible upgrade costs. Just:

Stick with 8GB. Even if you want more RAM, because this:

They charge extra for no damn reason. Bastards. But they make a nice product. I'm upgrading this Black Friday

As far as heat, they will both get warm. Buy a proper cooling pad.
