Alienware instead of building...

2468 Views 41 Replies 26 Participants Last post by  identitycrisis
I think rather then building my rig (see my sig) I am going to get an Alienware.

Although building may get a me a cheaper but more powerful system, I have to sacramental my mobility.

I am an on-the-go person kind of guy so a laptop would better suit my needs.

Should I still build, or get an alienware?

BUILD!
If you need a laptop get the Gateway FX. MUCH cheaper and will game well. 3870 CF is pretty outdated now.

not in laptops it's not. 3870 is better than most available options.
EDIT: but i really have to suggest you do not buy and alienware laptop, as they are REALLY overpriced.

It really depends what you want to use your computer for. If you think that you need a laptop and would potentially regret the choice of getting a desktop, then a laptop would be much more idea.

Laptops are more expensive, much less powerful and generally not made to game unless you spend an important amount of money in them. If you just want a laptop for a few simple processes but want to game...I'd say build your rig for gaming and with the money you save, buy a cheap laptop which will support basic things like internet, word, chat .etc

That was you will be able to game at home and have a powerful computer but also have a laptop for more on the go things.

It's so sad to see people buying alienware...

As mentioned above, take a look at alternative gaming laptops, like Gateway's FX series. MSI has some nice ones too.

Just please, PLEASE don't buy alienware.

what's the budget. i'm sure we can find a cheaper laptop for you for about the same price.
buy a lappy from ibuypower.com there cheap prices and you get a really great product, my friend got a killer one bout a year ago from them, and he loves it!
Asus G series laptops are also pretty amazing

But honestly...regardless of how "oh-the-go" you are, think carefully before going for a gaming laptop. have you ever actually tried carrying a 17in beast on your back/shoulder?? Not to mention youll be tethered to a plug the whole time
I have a 15.4 gaming notebook and honestly, these are not what theyre hyped up to be.

lol get an asus g series laptop, and then put a 4860 mobility in it when they come out.

Here's the deal...for the price you will pay for an Alienware laptop...you can buy a very nice one from cyberpower or ibuypower...and still have enough left over to build a decent system for the house.

Don't get me wrong...I love Alienware - but they are so darn overpriced that what you are really paying for is the little alienhead logo on the cover. Your money is better spent on performance rather than on a name.
Laptops for gaming...

Laptops are the only thing that alienware is priced decent at. I couldn't recommend an alienware desktop, but laptops I could unless they've changed, they use to be a good deal.
Alienware are overpriced always have been. Just most people don't know a lot about performance notebooks. Performance and notebook= Clevo. MSI and Asus have a few also.

iBuyPower earned the nicnkames YouBuyCrap, and WhyBuyCrap for a reason you know. They're worse than CyberPowerPC. Alienware, facepalm.

I've heard positive things about the Gateway FX laptops and their prices look pretty reasonable compared to others
Those quad and sli/crossfire laptops over heat like crazy. If you want a gaming laptop, like others said, get a fx. They aren't as cheap as they before they updated them but they're still a good price. I remember how the older ones were priced ridiculously low, they competed against laptops equipped with 8600 gt's.
