Alienware M17x with 2 Nvidia GTX 260 in SLI Problem

I have a friend that bought an Alienware laptop in August, the M17x. Apparently it comes with 2 GTX 260's in SLI and he's only getting 130FPS average in Counter Strike Source stress test. I looked around online and seen it says he should be around 250 with that laptop. I helped him overclock his CPU which is an Intel Core 2 Duo Quad Q9000 a bit but it only helped about 3 FPS. He went to Nvidia's website and let it scan his comp to see if it needed new drivers and it told him now which seems odd since he got in in August. Now I know 130 in a game isn't bad but that seems to me like somethings not right. His Anti Aliasing and stuff is off so nothing major is happening there either.

well the gtx 260m gpu's arent equal to a regular gtx 260. They are about similar to a 9800gt , but that still wouldn't explain this low score. I would first check under the nvidia control panel and see if sli is enabled, then completely wipe the drivers off and DL the updated drivers from nvidia.

i would say do a driver wipe and reinstal, it happened to me that SLI wouldn't turn on even if i enabled it in the drivers, and GTX 260m=8800gt so you have a setup similar to mine. But try that driver wipe

Alright guys thanks +rep. I'll make sure he sweeps the drivers and installs new ones and see how that does.
Okay what they've said above is correct, but honestly your friend is complaining about only getting 130fps when his refresh rate is more than likely 60hz... More than likely sli is disabled, but he will see 0 difference.

Yes I know I'm quite aware of this he's not complaing he can't get more FPS so he can be cool but he is using this result as a median to other systems like his. Obviously it should do the same as other computers like his which it isn't.

However he did everything you guys told me to tell him, and his Source Stress Test FPS average increased to 175. That's 45 better than before, still odd why it's not competeing with the same systems as he has in the 250's.

Check again! Just yesterday (12/04/09) Nvidia released a new notebook graphics driver. Nvidia's notebook driver program's goal is a quarterly driver release, so don't expect monthly releases like desktop graphics drivers.

Are you sure you are comparing to EXACT same systems? As mentioned earlier, notebook cards are NOT the same as the desktop cards that share the same model number, and are a LOT slower. Also, if you are comparing to web reviews, most of the reviewers get their notebooks totally decked out and the M17X would usually get reviewed with a QX9300 which is a much faster CPU. Your friend's Q9000 is only 2.0GHz, which is not that fast compared to any recent desktop quad core. Also, some enthusiasts like to tweak driver settings to gain FPS at the expense of IQ.

Also, what resolution?
