allocation unit size for SSD?

I have a Dell lappy which the HDD is dying, so I have decided to clone everything from the HDD to my Kingston 40GB SSD.

What are the things I need to do in order to fully clone the HDD's data(only 15GB I think) on to the SSD? Any recommended adjustment/tuning I should do before cloning it? Any good software that will make the job easier?

Now I have found the software I needed for cloning, and I have another problem now. I just plugged in the Kingston 40GB SSD, and it showed up as 43.2GB empty. Should I re-format it with a certain allocation unit size?

thanks in advance everyone
