I hate having money. </somewhat serious>

Can't figure out what I want.

I went from monitor + Optie 165, and a high end DX10 card when they start coming mainstream, to a Conroe rig with a medium end DX10 card, to a whole new S939 rig with a medium end DX10 rig, to a high end Conroe rig with DX10 sometime later NEXT year, back to the socket S939 rig, then to the Conroe, and back and forth about 50 times with different combinations of parts.

So, say you have $550. What would you do if you had my rig? Anything. Dual core CPU, up it to 2GB, get some decent headphones (I have a $5 Wal-Mart pair that has the foam coming off and sometimes only works in one ear), go for some nice speakers (have a medium/low end 2.0 speakers right now...only reason why I say low is because bass is really good on them, just that when bass kicks in, there is no high end), get a better case (Newgg the case...*shudder*), go strictly "extras" (No performance parts, just things like a case, sound card, speakers, headphones, headset, games, etc. I only own CS: 1.6, NFS: MW, Oblivion, and BF2 talking about games...), whatever. Just do what you would do.

Personally, I'm leaning torwards just "extras." I have a monitor that can only do 1024x768, hurts my eyes almost as much as my case, which is also crap, I have really bad cooling*, I have no DVD or CD burner, I've got a crappy HP mouse, and the list goes on. And to top it off I have no games.

The way I see it is I can keep upgrading hardware but even if its fast in terms of speed, it'll still be hot, ugly, and an eyesore.

I'm not upgrading video cards with DX10 this close just throwing that out. And for those wondering why I'm posting it in off-topic, try to show me another place to post it and I GLADLY will.

And for the * thinger, I just thought it looked cool.
But seriously, I'm thinking about water cooling too. I don't know whats good, I don't know all the "extras" I'll need (I know what I need as in actual parts [pump, rad, etc] but I don't know what type of tubing, clamps, etc I'd need). I'm more than willing to jump ship on air. Namely because I have major overheating problems in the summer due to the fact my mom never turns on the A/C.

And btw, sorry for a long post, I usually try not to make long posts because I usually get less repsonces the longer my post, but hopefully I get some input. And you don't have to use any of the suggestions I posted. Do what you would do. I'm just really itching for water cooling - but I'm not saying that I am definatly doing it.

*Edit*
BTW: if you tell me to upgrade my processor, or mobo, or RAM or whatever, keep in mind I can sell my old parts. I have no reason to keep old parts laying around.

Aren't mid-range (as in, ~$200) cards supposed to drop mid-next year?

I don't game because I don't have any games to play.

So after you spend tons on hardware for which you don't have any games you like, more games will suddenly materalize? I dunno about that... maybe you should pick up a few good games for now and just save the rest until it can be better spent.

....If you read my first post, I said suggest what you would do if you were in my shoes/had my computer, and one of the things I mentioned was if I should get more games and hardware, go for cooling, yada yada etc etc.

Oh right... well hmm, I only read the title

So yeah, don't do a full upgrade right now. Just get some fun games and some small stuff. That's what I would do if I were you. The only reason I have my current setup is because I was in a bind when I killed my X800XT and motherboard at the same time.

that comment was not really helpful or well thought out. as he said he doesnt have games right now, but that can be fixed easily. no need for borderline rude comments here.

I would try to see what you can get for your current rig. sell it indeed, like Mikey suggested.

with some luck, you end up with a total budget of about $1,000 or so...

Spend like $850 for a decent Core 2 Duo rig, and the rest for games.

My two cents

I was figuring that out earlier, and I'd probably get about $900 total for what I have saved and what I could probably sell mine for.

Once I add in a HDD, case, a P5B or S3/D3, a C2D, a PSU, an optical, with 2GB of RAM, I'm already at $850 with no money for a video card.

I think a monitor would be a really nice upgrade, and you might think about investing a bit more in it than you thought.

For around $275 you can have a nice 20" monitor, like one of these
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...k=&srchInDesc= or the new Dell.

Or a 19" for a little under $200. (I think the extra $75 is worth it).

Yeah it would work fine. For desktop use it would be a 100% upgrade. For games you would have to lower stuff like texture quality and AA so that you can run native res but I'm sure that overall it would look much better.
