alternative to GoPro HD camera ?

41635 Views 18 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  TC_Fenua
alright folks, im looking for a cheaper alternative to the gopro camera lineup, as i dont see myself paying that much for a simple use camera.

my needs:
- long battery life
- good fps / resolution ratio
- durability
- motorcycle helmet mount + paintball mask mount availability

anyone got some ideas to shoot in ?

Contour makes one with embedded GPS

http://contour.com/

as far as whether its cheaper ... dunno.

You could also look at the GoPro 960 instead of the HD.

I find the go pro to be better than the contour. The only other option would be something like a kodak playsport.

thank both of ya so far, looks like the contour is really just a less protected version of the go pro, the gps is like 350 bucks new, which is really not needed for my application, supermoto and paintball recording, i d honestly grab the gopro over the contour just by seeing the unprotected lens on it.

but keep em coming if theres more alternatives ;-)

oh and to pheoxs, man, i did not even think about the 960! its only like 180 retail, im going to check into it, any experience with the cam on your side ?
No actual experience with the 960 but it comes down to if you need certain features

comparing the 1080 and the 960 basically has 3 differences that the 960 is missing

Lack of 1080 @ 30fps
Lack of 720 @ 60fps (only has 30fps option)
Lack of support for 3D with a second one

I would say the biggest thing is, do you want the 60fps @ 720 or will 30 suffice. For most things I'd say 30 is perfectly fine if you are just recording random stuff, but for anything involving high speed footage, production, or more professional video I'd recommend going for the 1080 model so that you have the faster framerate option.
well paintball has some fast paced moves, and supermoto is usually filming at 40 - 80 mph with wheelies and jumps and such ;-)

heres a sample of what i want my videos to look like:

it helps if you give a budget , and honestly the go pros are the best at mounting to helmets. you can always find a used one i bet

If you have a local distributor (not bestbuy or any of those chain places), maybe an automotive parts supplier, they may have used demo models kind of thing you could negotiate for.

good idea, but in hinesville (not having to drive 40 miles to savannah) theres nothing, its basicly military base + some rip off stores

Good to hear! I'm really tempted to grab the HD Hero to mount on my bike (SV1000s) but I'm sure that as soon as its I'll end up doing even more stupid things on it...

on ebay, the cheapest motorsports on there brand new now are around $236 shipped, which in my case would still save me 30 bucks over buying it in the local PX

this thing is awesome, im working on some different mounting areas then my helmet, as i look back too much, kinda hard to see behind with 1.5" mirrors
