AM2+/AM3 Budget Board

1376 Views 19 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  sutty86
Hello all,

looking to build my first system and eventually narrowed the processor down to a Phenom2 x2 550,
and ive already got 4gb Ram DDR2 667mhz in 1gb sections

got a IDE Hdd (free pulled from tv recorder) but going to buy a sata,

so looking at a motherboard to support hopefully future upgrading so AM3 would be the obvious choice, but the price of DDR3 Ram at the moment is massivley high!

i would also like to play and overclock or maybe try to unlock some cores in the phenom,

Any Advice would be grateful like i said im all new to this,

Thanks

I strongly recommend you get this mainboard which is the right budget.
ive found that mobo at around £40
but its micro atx and only has 2 ram slots

what do you think to this mobo

https://www.pricelover.com/product/GA_M720-US3/
would it work well
with the phenom2 x2 black edition 550

No offence , but that's a horrible choice for a board.

I suggest getting a 785 chipset , since you will be able to try unlocking. Can you say the web sites you usually buy from? Is your video card Ati or Nvidia?

I bought that board for a budget build and it is amazing, but it does only use DDR3.

Couple of suggestions (used the site you mentioned earlier):
Asrock 770DE , Great for a budget , uses the 710 SB(allows unlocking) Has two pci-e 2.0 (x16, x4) not the best choice for Xfiring , but i bet it can handle two 5770/5750 without a noticeable performance loss, but still nice option for the money.
Another Asrock, but this time with a better south and north bridges , 790 + 750, price is great as well.
Two Asus boards(1st,2nd), almost identical. Both has the 785+710 chipsets

Got this from the main site, checked on newegg as well:
Main Memory
• Supports Dual Channel DDR2 667/800
- 2 DDR2 DIMMs (240pin / 1.8V)
- Supports a maximum memory size up to 8GB.

thanks for the replys guys,

i sometimes use

ebay
Ebuyer.co.uk
Scan.co.uk

and the cheapest is Pricelover.co.uk
sorry not bought a video card yet
Ati/Nvidia
im open to suggestions, like i said im into making my first build for personal use,
want to be able to play games smoothly as i dont have a dedicated gaming console
and be able to manage with everyday internet/watching films, with maybe a little bit of video works but nothing major, thats why i decided to go for a dual core(550BE) with a faster clock speed then a quad core (athlon)
like i say im on a budget,
dont have alot of cash with xmas,

Thank you

So what's your full budget , and what parts do you need besides CPU/mobo/gpu .

For 150 you won't get "Everything " , but mobo+Cpu+ ram is possible , maybe you have some old parts like HHD/PSU/Case/DVD drive, that you can use for this build . Otherwise it's next to impossible to build a gaming rig for that much.

i know i wouldnt get everything ive got 4gb ddr2 ,
got a ide Harddrive pulled from a tivo,
if your mobo budget is ~110 i'd suggest the Gigabyte GA-MA790X-UD4P. i have one and i find it very nice.

comes with a lot of features, and compatible with the latest AM3 processors yet uses DDR2 RAM. (hopefully the Thuban is DDR2 compatible! i hear differing stories)

edit: ah, so your budget is 150 for everything. nevermind!

Ok so that's minus two. What about PSU/Dvd-drive/case? Also i know you were interested in buying a 8800GTS , a nice card for the price he asks. Are you going to buy it?

For a graphics card i would say a ATI HD 5000 series as that will last u longer because of its DX11 compatibility.
A HD5750/5770 is about your budget?
WELL THE GPU is the last thing i want to buy ,i have £150 at the min to spend right now,
got a hardrive plus mem ddr2

I'm asking you the third time , do you have a PSU/Case/Dvd-drive from your old parts that you can use for this build? It's possible to build a pc without a case and dvd, but psu is important , and you can't go cheap with PSU's

Can you explain why you chose that specific mobo? Amd chipsets tend to OC higher from what i know, and also you got lucky that with the latest BIOS update that mobo can unlock cores(a couple of guys from other forums unlocked)
On another note, you start a build , with enough budget to only buy 2 parts(+ the ram you own) . Please tell me that the budget is going to increase in the nearest future, so you can finish the build.
Also are you sure that the ram you have are for desktop PCs, since you only owned notebooks in the past.

yes the ram i bought is for desktops as i bought it off ebay on the off chance, a few weeks back, it was a bargain and i knew i must have it,
and i chose the motherboard not that i got lucky but ive been reading the forum for a while and i knew i needed a certain chipset to unlock and play with the clock speed,
and the Gigabyte board was a cheap price,£45,
i will extend my budget in the future but obviously i need to save some cash for xmas etc has i have two little kiddies,im going to just look around ebay for the time being to see if i can get any sneaky buys etc..

Thanks for the comments
