Its an italian site, but they have some shots of a 4x4 system, and best of all, you don't need ECC ram!

Yeah instead of coming up with an actual product to combat with they came out with a dual cpu motherboard.... I like AMD alot but this is just a ploy to buy time for them. And that socket layout looks awfully familiar

I'm still kinda optimistic. Who knows, maybe it will be cost effective enough to justify it as an upgrade mid-2007?

Maybe by then I can afford something newer.

Uhh, no, did you read the article? It said somewhere around 700 dollars for the lowest FX 7x processor, and you'll need 2 of them. For the best one, it'll run you a hefty 1500 each, depending on currency exchanges. So, in the end i'd expect to pay about 1200-1500 in the base fx 7x processors, and maybe 2700-3200 for a set of the best fx 7x cpus amd has to offer.

And waxshop I totally agree with you, this isn't solving a problem, its just something to buy them time so they can pull something else off.

No I mean why didn't they just do a quad core 90nm chip like intel's pretty much doing with their core 2 quads, instead of making this super expensive cpu platform? I mean, how did intel combat amd's athlon x2- they came out with the smithfield- which was crappy, yes, but it did its job and it made for some competition with amd, who was the market leader. This thing is in an entire league of its own- its like the quadroplex almost.

Agreed. even if eight cores (which will even be more expensive), not worth it in my opinion. Way too expensive

Plus, socket F (1207). I wonder about overclocking.

Socket F (or 1207) is AMD's socket for server systems right now. It's the succesor for socket 940 (just like AM2 is the succesor of 939)

Right now, only Opterons and server boards can be had.

so your saying an Opteron is the fastest thing i can put in here? thats kind of a bummer, hopfuly they'll come out with an AM2 version

There will probably be new CPUs for this platform..

IT's going to be a new thing, so I am not even sure the current Opterons will work.

Again, like ThaWaxShop said, it's a stop gap solution. Yeah, it might perform ok, but at waht cost?

It's kinda funny because AMD first had the Opty's on s940 to distinguish it from s939 so people can't and won't mix ECC ram with Non-ECC ram and now they have both on the same socket. They might as well unify the socket design and save themselves some $$$.

Because its intended for those things. Hardcore enthusiasts, workstations, and cheap servers. The latter of the two are my guesses where it will be selling.
