Either of these boards better than the other?

Gigabyte GA-MA78LMT-S2 AM3 760G

or

ASUS M4N68T-M V2 Socket AM3 630a

It will be one of these two boards, so don't give another option (it is the $100 x4 and free mobo offer from Micro Center).

It will be just a basic internet/ office system with a x2 250, 2 gigs DDR3 and using onboard video (upgrading a Socket 478 with a VIA chipset).

I already have the DDR3, so my first choice of the 785G AM2+/AM3 board is not an option.

760G.... NVIDIA is out of the business so how much would you trust them for updates?

If you don't need an X4, the bundle works with X2.

"out of the business" in what way? I must have missed something.

As for the x4 vs x2, the x4 840 will go into my wife's computer, and the x2 250 from hers will go into the new build (a budget build for a friend who has no need for an x4, not that my wife needs an x4 either, but well, hers is my spare, so...).

I really wanted the unofficial x2 250 combo, but they are OOS of the 250 at my store and probably will not get any more.

Ahh, OK, did not know that.

No plans to overclock or unlock cores, so that is not needed.

Basically it will be put together and sit under her desk as is for 4+ years. Her S478 system I just tuned up still was running XP with SP2 and was only 256 or RAM (was able to bump it up to 512 and helped quite a bit). Completely coated in dust inside. I am also looking for a little better cooling than OEM due to this (looking around for one of the CM refurb deals again for a 212+ for like $15 shipped).

Out of the two... none
Go for at least 785G/880g/something that allows for full HD video acceleration

The 760G has the advantage of having a DVI output.

Both boards will be sufficient for basic office use though. If you don't need the DVI output, you could save some money by going for the Asus board.

How often will you need to update a basic office PC anyway? I reckon you'd never need a BIOS newer than the ones currently available on Asus' website.
Look at all the offices and schools still running P4s lol

Again, the choices are what I have listed. Also, her monitor is 1280x1024.
If I need better video, I would use a cheap dedicated card (I may have a 4350 I got for $10 somewhere if it is an issue).

They do have step up options also. That being said it sounds like you dont want to spend another dime so 760g it is.

Yea, the 780L is another $9.99, but she has $250 total to spend (talked her up from $200), so every little bit helps.

I still need a PSU (~$25 AR for the CX430, wish I had gotten it when they were $15 AR), DVD RW drive ($20), HDD (~$40), Card Reader (~$10).
I am charging her $55 for the board and x2 250, $15 for 2 gigs of DDR3 1333 (I paid $25 for it) And re-using her case.
That is already at $165 and I still need to buy Windows 7 for ~ $90 (wish she was a student so I could get that deal). And like I said, I would like better than stock cooling, but may not have a choice.

I am looking out for deals, but she will need it in about a month, so I can't wait too long.

There is always the windows server 2008 route. All you need is a .edu addy and i have several... im sure you could finagle that to work.

Sounds like your not making any money off of this build to me.

Nope, my plan is to hopefully break even.
It is a friend of my wifes, single mom, 2 kids, you know the story.

I had debated just selling her one of my older AM2 systems, but for just a touch more, I can get her all new and she will be set for years.

As for the OS, I just want something I can install and not have to worry about. The server 2008 is something that problems can arise from since it is not the "standard" Windows 7.

If I recall you had a M2N series board, can't remember the model, but they have updated bios' for up to the x4 945,if you were wondering.

Good memory. I sold that board (M2N SLI-Deluxe) quite a while back.

I have a server that is AM2 that I had thought about, but it is ATX (the case she has is mATX).

The 760G is the 3000 series (not HD3000), which falls short of UVD2 which is required for flash 10.1+ acceleration. This may be crucial for watching YouTube videos, even in 720p. Also, new web browsers leverage GPU acceleration so the more powerful, the better.
