I'm a dedicated nVidia guy so I'm a bit on shaky ground here but it is my understanding that any kernel after 4.15.x has had HUGE blocks of code added to support AMD/ATi. I've read several AMD/ATi users who have commented that they have compared by benchmarks and the in-kernel drivers are substantially superior to any other drivers. Where I'm shaky is which cards are best supported and which are not but it is a really big deal and worth a little research.
