Now we just wait to see if the driver suffers performance at the cost of lowered current from PCIE.

Well they did say that the new UI toggle affects the power draw with small performance impact. And then a few select game titles being optimized for better performance. I'd take it as offsetting the performance loss suffered from reduced power draw for now. After the new reviews are submitted, an informed decision can be made,

What about the people who bought the cards before all this came to be?
Going to be interesting to see how it plays out. If the performance reduction will be minimal (and if it will hit the OC performance).
I wonder if people will decide to return the reference 480s and wait for the AIBs instead.

You know well that if you were to return a card, you'd rather get a better card which is not from AMD at the moment

Looks like a typo, as it says "3%1", so I would believe they mean 31%.

As for discussion around loss of performance, probably due to lowering clocks on core and/or memory (probably memory)......what a bag of worms.

They claim to have increased performance up to 3% in popular titles through drivers to counter the power reduction.

I'm still not convinced this was even an issue for 95% of 480 buyers but certain media needed to be silenced as the controversy was damaging sales. I hope reviewers are as thorough when reviewing the GTX 1060.

Driver boost is welcome. 3%. Woo

No. Please stop.

Two options:

Quote:

The default solution: shift some of the power load off of the PCIe Graphics (PEG) slot connector, presumably in order to bring power consumption within PCIe spec. Note that AMD doesn't say anything about reducing the total power consumption, and given option #2, it's reasonable to assume that this involves holding the power requirements as-is and shifting the load to the external 6-pin power connector. Based on earlier data this would potentially put the 6-in connector further over spec, but the vast majority of PSUs are very tolerant of this going out of spec.

The optional solution: a toggle that reduces the total power consumption of the card, presumably ensuring both the PEG slot and 6-pin power connector stay below their respective limits. Since the RX 480 is already throttling at times due to power limits, this would further hurt performance, but it's also the most standards-compliant solution (and aptly named "compatibility" mode). AMD notes that this option will have "minimal performance impact", and while we'll have to see the results in the benchmarks, it's worth noting that power consumption is exponential - roughly to the 3rd power of frequency - so a small reduction in frequency can significantly reduce power consumption, as we've seen in the case of the Radeon R9 Nano.

Why are people automatically saying that a minor reduction in power consumption means a reduction in performance?
AMD have an ongoing trend of improving performance with new drivers and increasing the lifespan of their products.

Plus under clocking has shown an improvement in performance on these cards.

Even if owners lose a few % I'm sure drivers will bring that back plus some over the next month or two.

This.....people read what they want...even if it's not there.
The article states +3% with new drivers.
It also states they are trying to do something about the power draw load on the pci-e bus
in other words looking for a way to draw less power from pci-e and more power from the 6 pin connector.
They also mention they are going to give you the OPTION of reducing the total power draw of the card

The "1" in "3%1" is a footnote and it's this:

That's kind of the thing, according to Buildzoid, the 6pin powers the core, while PCIE slot powers the memory. If they're going to reduce power to memory it's probably not going to be able to clock as high, thus slightly reduced performance. Hell, AIB boards probably won't even have the problem at all. AMD chose a rather unorthodox power delivery system for their reference cards.

This won't pane out to be too bad for AMD. I'd say way less brand damage than the 970 3.5 gb issue.

So 3 % more if correct in some games that are going to be reviewed vs the 1060 . So the gap is reducing already. Performance per watt increases are already occurring through drivers - nice to see its this soon too thanks to the media making lots of noise about it. I guess 480 owners are getting some benefit from this non issue publicity already.

If you have a extremely crappy low end psu then you can tick compatibility mode to be sure you are ok , most people will not need to bother. I'd be surprised if this actually reduces performance much at all . Could improve performance for some ref cards if its undervolting as has been proven on numerous sites already.

Damaging sales ? last i read it was sold out everywhere ... doubt it.
