If you run at stock, the i3 might be faster. Overclock the 965 (not an option with an i3) and it wins.

The FX-4300 is in the same price range and is faster than both of them, though. For not much more, you can get an FX-6300 that blows them both into the weeds on any multi-threaded workload like video transcoding.

Well the i3 does have Intel® Quick Sync Video which from what I have read helps during video trans-coding, although more cores would benefit during it as well.
