This is a dangerous post. In the end, it comes down to a preference of brand, each CPU has strangths and weaknesses. Generally speaking, AMD performs better for gaming, whereas Intels do better with encoding and multi-tasking type things. That's a generalization, and doesn't apply to every single application. I thought long and hard (about year really) on which CPU to buy, a 3.2GHz P4 or an Athlon 64 3200. I read probably about 50+ reviews and benchmarks, and when it came down to it, the Athlon 64 was usually at least 20% faster in gaming so that's what I chose because all I use my computer for is gaming

It's alot the same thing as Hyper-Threading I'd think, theroreticaly would yeild twice the benefit since the data streams are twice as long, but real world probably less than 30% faster...
I'd also point out that AMD not only had their dual core systems running before Intel, but had the ability to do so with the K8 platform from day one...

Amen brother! Exactly what I think, Intel if you doing video/photo/music editing etc., and get AMD for pure gaming

I try to be as impartial as possible to provide assistance to people and just report my own observations. I will say however, if you wanna see some impressive overclocking numbers, go with a prescott, they seem to average like 600+MHz overclocks

speaking of which, just read today about the 90nm Socket 939 Athlon 64's, apparently they quite easily overclock to 2.6GHz or an Athlon 64 4000, I mean they even got a 3000 (1.8GHz) to run at 2.6GHz, that's insane, all on air cooling...
maybe I'll get one of those instead of a Mobile...

I know, same here, I'll wait to see more results though, but that's certianly encouraging

At 2.6GHz that thing has got to be a monster, it stomped the FX-53 in the benchs at those speeds...god think what it'll do with water/TECs or phase change...<drools> god I need a towel...

Ya I'm still debating on which CPU (AMD or Intel) am going to use for my 2005 computer. I might have to try one of those AMD's, LOL

well for the most part the computer will be for games and playing movies. the computer is going to be for the college years and beyond. so for C++ and other coding which cpu? i know for ASM it's going to have to be on an intel cpu. also i always see intel's wiht faster speeds? whats up wiht that?

One word: Parallelism
Mid next year, Toledo, dual core Athlon 64 FX-57...and it only gets better from there

The battle will never end, there will always be strengths and weaknesses for each, but no one can say what the future holds. A year and a half ago, if I was to decide between a P4 and an XP, I would've gone for the P4...

Ya I would have to go a P4 with HT for C++ and other coding IMO.

I believe (correct me if I'm wrong) it forces the use of the SSE instruction sets? Athlon 64's have SSE and SSE2, and SSE3 is supposed to show up some time soon.
Intel's higher clock rates and AMDs high performance and significantly less clock rates comes down to efficiency, the AMD cpus can perform many more operations per clock cycle than a P4 (not sure the exact number though) so AMD can process more information for every clock cycle.

I read that in an article the other day, but the Prescotts P4 already have sse3, LOL.

i'm not sure how modern day ASM works. it's rather CPU dependent. the code was made for IBM CPU's. i'm talking aboput writing directly to the CPU memory programing in ASM.
