Okay, so I've come across a bit of a dilemma. I try to avoid asking the "XXX vs. XXX" video card question, but I have not been able to find an answer. (partially because I've been largely disconnected from the tech world the past few months thanks to college and my baby, )

So, here's the deal. I can get nice hardware from my school and it gets absorbed into my $40,000+ of student loans, so buying a $500 video card (or two of them) is really no big deal to me.

I currently have one 7900GTX, and I just bought Oblivion the other week (awesome game BTW), and I'm not satisfied with the performance. The game looks so awesome that I want to turn the settings up more than I can now.

So my question is, do I buy another 7900GTX and go SLI? Or go the single card route and get a 7950 GX2? If I do that, will likely never get a 2nd 7950...that's just rediculous. Any other suggestions?

Also keep in my that I'm currently on a 1280x1024 LCD, but a widescreen is likely in my near future, so the ability to run higher resolutions is important!

Thanks for any opinions and help! (oh, and please don't say wait for DX10, G80, etc. etc. )

Actually a cheap way out is getting a 7900GTO and flashing it to a GTX. Then using that

I wouldnt get another GTX as it is really only good for super high res, like 22+" screen. I would personally look more into going Raid perhaps, or maybe Dual Core. Isnt Oblivion pretty CPU intensive?

Umm, not on that 3700+ The 7900gtx is being bottlenecked by the cpu anyways.

EDIT: Tobuk, where do you go to school?

Well, If you dont plan on running 2 7950's then I would just buy another 7900 unless having two dual slot video cards interferes with your PCI slot usage.

Well, if you don't want to spend too much, get a dual core 165 or something. If you are gonna change rigs go C2D and get an 8800GTX (should be the same as 7900GTX SLI).

Otherwise, I pretty sure oblivion likes dual core.

Yes dual core will help with the performance. But i'd suggest you wait for 8800's series since it won't be that long

Also, you can tweak Oblivion with dual core. Just edit the .inf file and it should boost your performance

Buying a 7950gx2 would be a step backwards, imo. A 7950 is the same core as the 7900, but has the core and memory clocks lowered to deal with the heat problems that come with that card. Also, remember that you can't use aftermarket air cooling with those. Since you're not interested in the 8800 coming in 2 weeks, I'd say your only choice is to either buy another 7900gtx or to improve your cpu performance. Btw, Oblivion is one of the few games that actually makes Raid worthwhile. Loading quickly makes the game much more enjoyable, especially when you're zoning so often. It won't help with the actual gameplay, but it most definitely will shorten the loading/zoning times.
