Another 9800GX2 for 4-way SLI ?

615 Views 15 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  Skullzaflare
well, I've got one 9800GX2 and was thinking if I should get another one, save for a different card later on when a new series comes out that is worth switching to, or get a cooler for my current 9800GX2 and OC ?

What I think right now is that getting a GPU cooler is the most worthy option ?

What do you think?

Thanks in advance.

I suggest to get an another 9800GX2 and overclock after that.
If you plan on gaming with that then I'd suggest to passing on quad SLI because it does not scale well. Right now standard SLI and tri SLI are where things scale well.
Sell you 9800GX2 and get a GTX260 or better.
I'd advise against getting another one of those. I've never been big of multigpu solutions but the 9800gx2 seems to have been forgotten by nvidia for some reason as far as optimizations go. If you want to increase your performance maybe you could try selling your gx2 and use the money to help buy a mono-gpu gt200 board which will also consume far less energy
I say if you can get a good price for a GX2 then do it. Otherwise like the other say; go SLI or TRI for better scaling. You could always get another GX2 and just fold on it.
alright thanks, Ill probably sell it soon enough :]
what is a good price for a 9800gx2? would it be a good alternative from the gtx260 if i'm trying to save cash?

one more thing.... would a single 9800gx2 out perform my 2 8800 GS's?
yes 1 9800gx2 will destroy 2x8800gs, in modern card terms its like 2 downclocked GTS250s in SLI.
i would advise against selling it, the gx2 has gtx 285 like perfromance, so no single gpu card will really be an upgrade, and the gx2 is the folding king. keep the GX2, its enough for anything right now.

8800GTS = GTS 250, so a 8800GS is not a downclocked GTS 250. It has far less stream processors, smaller memory bus, and a much better overclocking ability.

@ OP; 9800GX2 don't scale very well, and there are driver issues. If you sold it and bought two GTX 260's they would probably perform better.

quad sli isnt worth it, even though you cant sli on your board

but, for a cooler, unless you get water, you need 2 heatsinks, i cant remember the name of the one, theres 1 than can be used backword snad frontword, its the one mostly used on the gx2

You could easily sell it to a folder. I kinda wish i could find the cash to grab one as my 4830's don't even give me 5k ppd.

keep it a GTX 260 is a downgrade, the 9800GX2 and GTX280 are on par, and one will win or loose depending on game. What you have is not a GTS250 SLI, anyone saying that go read the specs. What it equates to an 8800GTS512 SLI setup.
