1391 Views 22 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  INFAMYBLADE
need one to run my sig rig, along with 8 120 mm fans( unsure on how much this would matter )/ bigger graphics card later on, least 1 gig gddr5 radeon and possible a smaller one for physx with it.

had this one in mind but unsure on the power and if it'd be enough.

any thoughts? suggestions around the same price?

Probably not enough if you plan to upgrade... Otherwise it seems OK for your current setup.
I'd go with a Corsair 750W or something, if you plan to upgrade your GPU. Your GPU seems to be the weakest link here when I'm looking at your rig. Everything else is pretty much nicely up to par.
The RG530-S12 might be a better option. Newer build, and has an EPS12v cable (8pin CPU) which is important for an i7/i5 build.

The M12II would be a good option too, more so if you want modular.

Though, if you wanted a really outstanding PSU, the X-Series 650watt is a big dog on the block.
You unfortunately can't get a quality PSU for under ~$65, the cheapest PSU I can recommend for your computer is the Corsair VX550 unless you want your PC to be a fireworks display. However, the VX550 will handle Radeon 5770 Crossfire or a single faster card (5870)

That is a solid unit. But it is getting a little old.

And none of the units I recommend would harm his rig. Most modern PSU's will not harm a rig as they have Active PFC's, OVP, OCP, ect.

Eh, a lot of sub ~600W corsairs can be found under 65 during deals.
Also, exploding PSUs very rarely happen, so there's no need to worry about it.

Still, the thing is, he said he's probably going to be running 2 GPUs in his system, along with his current setup. I'm estimating that it's going to take > 600W to run...

Active PFC actually doesn't have any impact on how safe the PSU is, it just helps even out the load the PSU puts on the power system to prevent... something to do with resonance. I dunno. Anyway, you also have to consider that many cheap power supplies "technically" have OVP, OCP, et al, but they implement it poorly, like setting the tolerances too loose, or using poorly made protections chips.

The Corsair VX550W is still a very solid PSU, a good CWT design with a few improvements by Corsair. Sure, it doesn't have all the bells and whistles, but they're about as dependable as they come, which is what really counts in a power supply. I've only ever come across one VX550W that failed, out of dozens that I've seen or recommended, and the guy had it replaced by RMA within a week.

Anyway, the 8400GS could survive on a quality 350-400W PSU, like the Corsair CX400W. But if you plan to upgrade I'd suggest a Corsair VX series PSU. The VX550W can power any single GPU rig, except maybe an overclocked i7 with a 5970. And that's a dual GPU card.

My friend's Apevia 500w went out with a "pop" powering a Q6600 and 8800GT and sparks went flying out the back

Since then I've only used quality PSUs

I know exploding PSUs are rare, but I like to be cautious and get a higher-end PSU then I really need

For a good quality power supply, I would recommend a $70+ power supply at around 600W, I have complied the following power supplies for you to choose from

- Antec TruePower New TP-650 650W
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817371021

- mushkin XP-650 650W
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817812001

- CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX 650W
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139005

As for the mushkin unit, not quite sure but it seems to be a solid power supply

reason I was more scaled back on budget with this was so I could order a dark knight with it and recieve both at the same time. I thinking it'll be better to hold off until right after christmas and see what funds I have available to spend then. better to wait and not be disappointed at something half decent right? Just been trying to get this one rig done forever and it's been one thing after another stopping me haha.

Thank you very much for these suggestions, I had look at the mushkin and it was in my choices as well. I'll keep them all 3 in mind, pending how much cash I have after christmas.

That's because it was an old, over rated, turd. I denoted new PSU's.

Don't touch the Mushkin unit, it's not a good build. And most of the Mushkin PSU's are pretty much paper weights.

Get the VX550 or RG530-S12

It's easy to tell which PSU's are good and which are bad. Check how many amps they have on the 12v RAIL.

A 550watt PSU should have 500watts of 12v power in my book.

And Amps x Volts = Watts.

So a 550watt PSU should have around 40-41 Amps on the 12v RAIL.

You'll also want to look for PSU's that are certified with the latest Specs of ATX12v & EPS12v standards.
IE: Basic things like OverCurrent Protection, Overvolt Protection, Active PFC.

This guy is looking for $70 shipped for a 750w PC Power and Cooling, probably around the best deal you'll get

EDIT: sold already anyhow lol.

Keep an eye out for the upper-end Seasonic PSU's as well, they have some of the best efficiency, reliability, and overall build quality out there.

You shouldn't need more than 600w. The wife is running a CM stacker with 8 fans and an OC'ed CPU and GTX260/8800GTS (physx) without any issue off a 550w Corsair CMPSU-550VX without any issue.
I would take a serious look at the Antec line of PSU's. Especially if you are looking for reliability and protection.

Every mid-high end Antec PSU comes with OCP (Over Current Protection) that covers all of the rails, including the +12V rails.

Another reason I go with Antec is that their PSU were also called "Most reliable PSU's on the market" from an independent study >> http://www.newegg.com/ProductSort/Ve...&articleId=653

I use NewEgg to buy most of my gear. They seem to have the best prices. Best of luck!! >> http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...TabStoreType=1
update:

had the cash to blow today.. needed a psu and ram.. so I decided to keep saving for ram and just spend a good part on the psu today.

ended up with this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...9011&Tpk=850hx

though I got it from tigerdirect with 8% bing cashback and free shipping.
How did I do? Any opinions on the one I picked out?
Great PSU! Modular is awesome, I had to get creative hiding all my extra cables.

A corsair 750 just went up for 75 on the for sale threads here
