well i am still in my planing phase for my summer overhaul and i was really hoping to get a new sound system for my rig. i am an avid gamer, movie watcher, and usually am blasting the crap out of music.

For games i do mostly FPS and some racing

Movies, a lot of action movies with explosions and such (i wanna be able to feel these)

and for music I listen to pretty much everything so it is hard to say there (iTunes consists of 10998 songs)

my only limitation is that it has to be under 200USD Don't know why i said that, read on to find out.....

what i am pretty much asking is what is the best 2.1, 4.1, 5.1, or even 7.1 system i can get with that price range that will rattle your teeth out
biggrin.gif

thanks all!

EDIT: found the speakers, looking for sub for speakers for under 250usd (look at post 18)

It's pretty hard to achieve a high quality audio with a sub at the price point, but the Klipsch Promedia 2.1 should fit that bill. I would say the Swans M10, but they lack bass for movies. The Promedia has a much larger sub though.

Another thing you could do would be refurbished M-Audio AV40s and a separate sub, but then that would run over your limiti.

200 is a flexible limit, essentially i am trying to see how much money i have to make this summer to get this stuff, so if it is over 200 then i will just have to work a bit harder.
Klipsch Promedia 2.1's seem like a good enough option. Be careful with "flexible budget", especially in the audio department, cause costs can really ramp up to chase that "little bit better" (I'm currently suffering that right now
).

M10's are usually a nice suggestion, but don't fit his bill at all, that sub is pretty much a mid-woofer and won't give him the deep bass that he so desires.

The optimal setup for standard computer listening is a good 2.1 system, with good dedicated monitors (KRK Rokit 5, Mackie MR5, NHT SuperZero (I can't vouch for that last one)), with a decent sub (a dayton sub is usually recommended), and a sound card for it all.

Of course this will drive you to pretty much double or at least go 1.5x your budget if you skimp out on something. At your price point, the Promedia's may be your best option.

If you're willing to go $100 more, I'd point you to the Swan M50W, or as mentioned previously, go used on M-Audio AV-40's and a sub

This is so true.

I did that once and then my bank account started crying that it was empty.

I hope you were crying in joy in proportion to the amount your bank account cried for having no money
so by the looks of this in my price range i am not going to get anything much better than what i already have.

i have the older deactivated version of these
okay CA is horrible... Get yourself some av40s and then buy a sub later on down the road.
Don't buy a 2.1-in-a-box, you'll regret it once you appreciate true hi-fi. Buy a good set of 2.0 and be satisfied for now. You won't get tangible bass AND good sound for under $200, so best to wait until you have another $90+ to drop on a sub.

Of course this goes without saying, but 4.1, 5.1 and 7.1 setups are to be absolutely avoided in this price range.

If anyone has recommended Swans M10 yet, that's the only 2.1 I'd recommend. Otherwise, AudioEngine A2 and MAudio AV40 are great options.

I concur with this but the swans are good though, also you be from head-fi!

You have access to an old receiver?

The polk RM6750s are actually pretty nice. The mids are okay, but I haven't really been able to fully test thme out that much. Highs and lows are excellent.

if you can go overbudget, here is a receiver thats on sale. I have no idea if it is good or not.

Guys, have you read the description of what he wants? M10's wouldn't fit, best he can do is two monitors and a sub.

LingLing, i'm surprised you're not recommending the M50W, it might fit what he wants a fair bit more, and would cost the same as two monitors and a sub.

But yea, at $200, an "upgrade" would be gradual, first with monitors then with a sub, but of course, you'll be without that rumbling low end for a while.

Aka, it might be best to wait, or if you're willing to sacrifice the low end altogether, go for M10's, if you're willing to sacrifice the low end for the short term, go get some used speakers and wait on a sub.

If one's willing to sacrifice the low end he should get the av40s.

He should skip to the D1080MkII08's or Audioengine A2'd if you want to go at it xD, but considering budget restraints and how quickly you'll want to get a sub in there...yea AV40 sounds right

Shatterist how would you compare those swans compared to the av-40s?
edit: derp thought you said the Swan D1010MkII08 s.
ok, for an over view, i am planing on ordering a new case, a better CPU cooler, and these swan speakers for my sumer overhaul, it comes to about 350usd which is about what i was planing.

if i make the same amount i did last summer i will still have about 250usd left over. is there a good sub that falls with in that range i could look in to?
There's a BIC F12 on sale on amazon right now for liek 140, i like the dayton subs myself.
For $250 you have a tons of decent subs for that price. The Lava 10" sub, Emotiva, Bic PL-200 dips down to ~$250 every so often.
