I'm building my first rig and have the Q6600 chosen as my CPU because it can OC well (and I'd like to try that out later on).
But I was wondering if there are any 45nm Quad Cores that can overclock just as well (or better) than the Q6600 (which is on the way out)?
45nm cpu's have way more headroom than the old 65nm process. The Q9650/Q9550/Q9450 can probably OC very high as long as you have the mobo and ram to take you there.
You also have to realize that all chips vary, and do not necessarily net the same results for overclocking.
I hope you did not buy that Q6600 new in retail, because the new batches are not as good overclockers.
call me an ati pusherman, but those Phenom II X4' 940's and 920's are cheaper than anything with the same performance from intel. If you got deep pockets, got i7, but if not, i would consider a 940 be

The 940's and 920's out perform the Phenom II. The 920's out performs most if not all the Phenom II series.
My 940 is 45nm (but AMD) and it OCs great but before it's $40 price drop I was debating between the Phenom II 940 and the Q9550. Q9550 is a bit more then the Q6600 but it's worth it, but the Phenom II is around the Q9550's performance(SLIGHTLY lower) but in the middle of price range.
If you have an LG775 board that supports 1333MHz go for the Q9550! If not you choose.
Q9550's OC so much better than the current Q6600's do. The current 66's max at 3.4Ghz or so because of horribly ****ty VID's, but 9550's are going 3.8Ghz or higher.
If you can afford it , go for a q9650. For everyday tasks and gaming, a q6600 would probably suit you just fine though. With a q6600 you're not really guaranteed anything past 3.2 or 3.4
