Any advice on a wii?

Ok let me start out that the last console I bought was a PS2 when they first came out, I am a PC gamer these days. We are going to get a Wii for Christmas for the kids(age 4 1/2 and almost 2 years old). So I have a few questions:

1) What version of the Wii should I get
(there are a few bundles)?

2) How many and what controllers should I get?

3) Any good little kid games would be awesome to know?
(The kids really haven't played any games up to this point, but will catch on quickly)

4) Any games that would be good for the entire family?

5) Any games that I need to get for me?
(In the past I have played, racing games, Final Fantasy games, Dynasty warriors)

EDIT: Update: I bought the Wii, got a recertified from newegg on cybermonday for $139, also got wii sports, wii play, disney sing it pop edition, got two wii motes, 4xnunchucks, and a Wii Fit Plus w/board.

think any version should do as there really hasnt been any detrimental bugs with this system as opposed to that system. some good kids games r mario kart and the wii sports which it comes with, which r also good family games. some games that I enjoyed r star wars force unleashed, resident evil 4, mad world, zelda to name a few. enjoy it, i love my wii but ull find alotta ppl on here dont like it

Yeah well I am not a big wii fan due to it feeling like its aimed at younger kids. If I was buying for me it would be a PS3. The last new nintendo systems I owned we the NES and SNES.(N64 was terrible and I never bought another nintendo after playing a bit on that)

But the PS3 and Xbox360 really don't cater to the little kids. I found a couple of dora and diego games that are probably what I will grab, just have no clue if they suck or not.
I'm not to big of a wii fan and mine seems to be collecting dust, but I'll give my thoughts on it.

1) Sorry I can't help on bundles since I bought mine ages ago.
2) I think you should get 3 or 4 so you can do multiplayer and play with the kids.
3 + 4) Not sure about this either. However, I think many of the Mario games, like Mario Kart and Party, would be a pretty good choice for the whole family. The wii sports game that came included in mine was good for when friends and family decided they wanted to play with the wii.
5) Really I haven't played too many wii games, but I would recommend Twilight Princess (only if your a Zelda fan or else you probably won't like it), Resident Evil 4, and if your a Mario fan, Galaxy would be another good choice.

Alright I appreciate the help a ton, because I hate going in blind.
Honestly the game that gets the most play from my Wii is Rock Band 2 >.>

Stay away from Red Steel and other crap games like that, you may like Boom Blox, and I wanna get De Blob so you may look into those games, Rubix world is a nice party game too.

Yeah I doubt I will have enough money to invest in rock band(and all the toys).

Anyone else?

1. I would try to find some kind of bundles that includes the new Mario Bros/Mario Kart/Super Smash Bros bundle.

2. I would get at least one controller for each person you intend on playing the system. It is never fun to have to switch wiimotes back and forth between players. Just get four and not have to worry about this. I also suggest getting a wiimote charger so you don't run through zillions of batteries.

3. Boom Blox, Zak and Wiki (When the kids get a little older, its problem solving), Wii Sports Resort, Little League Baseball.

4. Smash Bros, Guitar Hero/Rock Band, Mario Party, Mario Kart. All of those will be good for family fun...

5. Zelda, New Mario Bros, Mario Galaxy, Resident Evils.

Oh, and have you checked out www.wiihaveaproblem.com ?

I have a 360 and a Wii, with a 7 year old son and a 9 year old daughter. Honestly I find that they play the 360 more but the Wii does get some occasional use.

Mario Kart is pretty much a "must have" for anyone who owns a Wii. There is a decent "homebrew" following for the system which should give you access to countless games, of course the same can be said about the 360 as well.

wii's are good for kids they will love it

as mentioned boom blox is good for the whole family, super mario galaxy (galaxy 2 soon) is a fantastic game for any mario fans and prety much anything with mario in on the wii is worth a go. it also has the new metroid wich you should enjoy

as mentiond before you realy do need one remote for everyone who will be playing and rechargable batterys are a must. There is also some very good arcade games available so a couple of the clasic pads/ gamecube pads might be worth a look at. its also very easy to run some clasic nes/snes megadrive emulators on there aswell

all in all there good little machines for what they are, they are FUN not serious gaming machines

I don't see a 4 year old understanding any 360 games or PS3(which is what I would get for me lol). And definitely not a 20 month old(who won't get the wii either but will have fun swinging and seeing it on the tv).

By the time she is 7-8 years old at least 3 years will go by and the wii will be a distant memory I am sure.

No wonder the wii is cheaper than the other consoles.....

Wii = $199
3x controllers($40ea) = $120
2xgames used for daughter($20ea) = $40
Wii fit plus = $90
Game for son = $18
Recharger for two controllers = $20

Total = $487.....wow.
you're underestimating total controller cost too.

the controller alone is $40, but some games require the nunchuck ($20), and the motionplus now (another $20)

so $80 for a complete controller :/

anyway i'll just post what games i have and maybe one of the names will make you wanna look into em

dokapon kingdom
fire emblem: radiant dawn
house of the dead: overkill
the legend of zelda: twilight princess
mario kart
mario party 8
muramasa
new super mario bros
octomania
okami
punch-out!!
sega superstars tennis
super mario galaxy
super paper mario
super smash bros. brawl
tales of symphonia: dawn of the new world
trauma center: new blood
wario land: shake it
wii sports resort
zack & wiki

my wii mostly gets used to play mario kart 64 though :/

I am having a hard time finding any games that I am even slightly interested in. Found several for the kids and wife which is the main purpose anyways. The graphics on this thing look like my old ps2 at best.
lol man wii games are 480p

most ps2 games were 480i, a few were 480p, and a bunch were even lower res :/ not that many games have widescreen support either.

but yeah the library for the wii is pretty weak.

Any games containing the words Mario and Kart in the same sentence. Loved that game on the old Nintendo. :'>

LOL I remember playing FF1 on nintendo. Yeah I had a superNES and NES when they were new. But the N64 really turned me away from nintendo.
