Any detailed pictures or tips for applying thermal paste to Core 2 Duo? (w/TRUE HSF)

I've applied thermal paste a dozen time to a dozen CPUs and follow the instructions on the Arctic Silver website but I always think I'm applying too much or too little, etc.

Does anybody have any really detailed pictures or tips on how to apply it? (and how much)

I'm going to be using a Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme (TRUE) heatsink/fan in case that matters...

There is no right way of applying TIM in absolute, there are just a few guidelines that you need to keep in mind when applying TIM. Also there is no special method of applying TIM on C2D, you do it the same way for all modern CPUs (not considering those without IHS) out there.

Generally you should use a single drop "about the size of a pea". The thermal paste will automatically spread out evenly when you install the cooler

Edit: I know that's not the TRUE, it's just a random image I selected to show you what I mean.

No, there IS a guideline for applying it to Core 2 CPUs. A single small line in one direction for dual cores, and in another direction for quads...I'll see if I can find the picture.

Diagram with a red line a little bit down in the document. Bottom of page 4 to be exact.

Actually this is the correct method for Arctic silver 5. when in doubt follow the manufacturers instructions.

Should look something like that, but follow the guides at

This is kind of messy but I take an amount about half the size in giecsar's pic and spread it around the heatsink with my finger. You just need a thin film of paste, and I dont trust it to spread enough on its own.
What do you guys think about the pictures located here: http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1232876

People in that thread are saying it's way too much but it looks like the same amount displayed above...

Also, in the picture displayed above it looks like width/height of a pea but spread out which ends up being bigger than a pea-shaped drop...

If you are using arctic silver 5 then the line method is the correct method. No drops, no spreading just a single line exactly as the manufacturer recommends.

The paste will spread since its under pressure and heat. It takes a little time but it will work just fine.

Depends on manufacturer of the TIM, because not all TIM are the same. Some are thicker and some are watery. You do not state what you are using only the method your using...
Thanks for the replies.

The pictures in that BenchmarkReviews site look pretty watery so I maybe you guys are right about following the Arctic Silver instructions (eg. using a line).

Does anybody have any other pictures beside the one posted above that use the line method?

Also, did anybody get a chance to look at the hardforums link I sent to tell me what you think of the amount applied in that picture?
