The 4xxx series are pretty cheap now, and I was thinking about getting a new GPU. What's the best 4xxx series card, and how much does it cost? How does it compare to the 5770?

The 5770 is on par with the 4870, you can only really get the 4890 or the 4870x2 for an 'upgrade'

I would keep what you have and go crossfire if you are unhappy with the performance.

Edit: do you only have one PCI express slot? if so have a look at the 6870 or above.

Yeah, I only have 1 PCI Express.

Yea I wouldn't go down to a 4 series. You know the 5 series prices are pretty low, what about a 5870?

I kind of have a $250 budget to get the best possible card. 5870 was really expensive last I checked.

The 5770 is actually SLIGHTLY slower than a 4870. So a 4870 1GB or a 4890 would both be upgrades. Or a 4850x2 or 4870x2.

However it would be kind of silly to lose features and downgrade the card, even if it is a slightly stronger card.

$250 will get you a 6950 or a GTX560. Both would be HUGE upgrades to your current card.

4890, 4850x2, 4870x2, but the last two suck power like you wouldn't believe. You'll be giving up lower idle power draw and DX11 if you went down to the 4XXX series, stick with what you have and look at the 58XX series.

$210 is well within your 250 limit. Have you even looked at prices of cards lately? And yes as pioneer said, those are also 2 great cards.

Why are you recommending older 5 series cards, when he could get a 6950 or GTX560 (or even a 570 if its open box), and wipe the floor with the older 5 series?

5770's in CrossfireX are faster then 4870's in CrossfireX.

Seeing as how they are around the same price point I also don't see a point in going with an older 5 series.

We weren't talking about crossfire though, now were we? OP has a single slot board, no Crossfire.

A 6950 would walk all over that, and its the same price or cheaper (if you got the 1GB 6950). GTX560 would be about the same performance, but quieter and cooler.

5770's scale better then 4870's, that's why they have the advantage in Crossfire. If he had a board that could, I would have suggested buying another one too
