Anyone changed the HD and power LEDS in an Antec 900

Over the Easter, I want to do a basic mod on my brothers Antec 900. I will paint it black and replace all fans with red models.

However, is it possible to replace the blue HD activity and power LED's at the top of the case? Has anyone done it before, is it easy? Where can i get the correct red LED's to replace them with?

Appropriate thanks will be given for useful posts

You should be able to exchange those leds without much hastle, just measure their diameter and exchange for new ones.

The HDD activity led and power led are both rated at 3.3v so it's basically "plug and play" (for most types, since if I'm not mistaken there are 2V leds) without the need for resistors, there are different brightness leds, but that depends on their current draw.

All I will have to do is solder, correct?
Basically yes, but how the leds are placed and fixed on that case, that I don't know, I'm also thinking in changing my P190s leds too, they are 3mm rounded ones if I'm not mistaken, pretty much like the photo below.

One thing though, you have to pay attention to the polirization of the led. Up to now every led I used the larger pin is the +, but for already used leds where pins have been trimmed, if you look inside you'll see two plates, there, the smaller one is the +.

Here's a photo of one:

Yeah, i suppose the answer is to give them a test before soldering to ensure i have the correct polarization. If i manage to do it succesfully, i'll make a small guide, because it seems like quite a useful thing to be able to do.

Wonder if it's easier and cheaper to get LED's off the net or in some electronics store.

Its easier to pick some up at an electronics store but it will definately be cheaper on the net. You can find packs of LEDs for a few dollars online whereas Radioshack charges a few dollars for one.

Yeah, i just looked online and it's like 10p/LED. Ebay seem to only do packs of 50 or 100!

I suppose i'll have to measure them up as i'm not sure whether they are 3mm or not.

Is it safe to trim the positive and negative pins of the LED if they are too long right? Also, are they flexible in case i have to bend them?

Cheers, but shipping 5 red LED's across the pond isn't really financially feasible

I'm sure Maplins have some, but if not, i've already found some online UK/EU stores

Perfectly safe. And yes, they are rather flexible.

What type of paint should be used for this?
I'm using a basic black spray paint after sanding with 600 grit and priming.
i have personally taken off the top and looked at the leds, because only a tiny piece is poking through the top the led has kinda a "nipple" for lack of a better word
so you can but any standard one in there but it might not glow correctly and bleed
and be sure to have hot glue ready because nearly everything under there is hotglued
hope this helps
