Just wanted to get an idea of how common it is to have your wc system fail.

I imagine the only thing that can really crap out is the pump.

Some dude put the fear in me when he told me he came home to find a cooked system bc of bad wc.

thanks much

you can always set your comp to turn off at a set temp in BIOS, mine is set to 60C so if the pumps dies when Im not there there wont be any other damage
Or if he was talking about a leak thats why we leak test before putting the componants in

Yeah, I figured there had to be a fail safe. wth was this guy doing....he runs are local pc store.

My pump started to fail, but it was gradual and started making a very loud rattling noise so it wasn't much of a problem, and I replaced it before it completely failed. Tubing hardly ever leaks unless you don't secure it properly in the first place so that's not much of a problem either.
It's the same with air, if the fan on your cooler broke. However, ThermoTrip should turn your PC off.
No WC system is ever 100% safe. Anything can happen, and thus constant attention is the best prevention for WC failures.

On the upside however, with proper leak testing, and with a little vigilance you shouldn't have any issues with a properly setup WC loop. Pumps will eventually fail, but usually it won't be a catastrophic failure thus you should have plenty of warning.
Of the many WC systems that I have assembled and used none have ever failed.

That is not to say that there were not initial issues (rare), but once the system was dialed in it was smooth sailing.

No failures yet(A year). I got old used watercooling equipment in trades and its all still going strong. I remember a couple a times the pump didn't turn on when I turned the computer on but I found out that it was cause of a loose power connector. Other than that, no issues yet.
I only have software to shut things down but I want a little more (second ring of defense) I want to come up with a pump amperage monitor, too low or too high, mobo gets shut down. I actually have a pump amperage monitor right in view, but I have to be there to take action.

Do you guys feel comfortable enough to leave home with your rigs running? I don't yet,and its not leaks I fear it that pump failing.

I set my bios to shut off my PC if the CPU hits 80C, and it has once, when I forgot to plug in the pump

Well honestly you're being a bit paranoid. Not digging on you, but the pumps we're all using are rated at something like a 5 year constant on lifespan. I leave all the time for weekends of skiing, often forgetting to put the computer into hibernate, and I never worry about pump failures.

Another thing to consider is that an electromagnetic ceramic bearing pump is going to fail the say way fans do: slowly with a lot of warning. You're most likely going to hear grinding/squeaking noises from your pump well before it completely gives up.

Im guilty of this also... Since then ive hooked the pump RPM sensor up to the CPU header and havent had an issue since.

Man I accidentally left my computer on over thanksgiving when I went to NC
And when I came back guess what, it was still running fine
But yea, I leave my computer on all the time with the watercooling system and I have never had any issues.

mine hasnt in 9 month. i think the pumps only get higher fail rates when using dyes and additives unlike PT Nuke
I've had a D5 vario stop without warning and it was only a few months old. I'd at least have some software shutdown on max temp running - and then just hope windows doesn't crash.
Thanks for all the info. Just wanted to make sure getting into wc wasnt a can of worms

probably a prebuilt kit... they fail.

with proper parts, and taking good care when installing the chances of that happening are about as big as your CPU frying itself doing nothing.
Sure theres a freak occurrence every once in a while... but its just that, nothing more.
