Anyone Know Better Than Onboard Raid Controller?

902 Views 21 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Fallen Angel -X
Hey
Ok guys i went raid yesterday

Did some HD Tune Benchies
Posted them on here

And got told by numerous people that my raid controller is bottlenecking my drives

So im looking for a raid controller and dont want to spend over £50

Any controllers in that range that would beat my onboard one?

Thnx

sb750 should not bottleneck two drives in RAID0 I'm pretty sure.

Well are my drives performing to full performance?

In MW2
My mates load quicker than me

They have same cpu,780g mobo and 1 single 500gb drive,4gb of ram

Even when im in raid they still load way quicker than me

Is it my ram?

Your controller is maxed out, or you have a driver issue. Either way, you're not getting the full speed out of those drives.

The curve should be smooth and continuously sloped, yours is flat across the top - controller bottleneck.

Hint: the "save" icon in HDtune gives you a screenshot of the program, instead of posting a 1920x1080 shot of your entire desktop.

No, you don't need to reinstall. Take an image of your installation to another drive, short stroke, then restore the image to the new, smaller partition. More short-stroke info below..

He continually says its my controller

Is he right?

Or is it my ram?

what level RAID are you planning on running?

a simple RAID 0 or RAID 1 isn't going to benefit from a hardware controller.
the posterboy example of when it's useful is running a RAID 5 array.

also, when you mean "loads faster" do you run a test or are you referring to loading the OS or an application. which can be influenced by quite a number of things.

edit-----------
I should also mention that a quality hardware controller is expensive as sin. unless you can procure like a Perc 5i or something similar

Did you view my HD Tune Screen shot?

Apparantly it indicates that my controller is bottlenecking me

But not so sure now

Really appreciated

So you reckon my results are about right?

But why is mine so jaggie where yours is a smooth line?

Looks fine to me. I don't know much about RAID or why it would be more jagged... Sorry.

I don't mean to be blunt, but I fail to see where it says "bottleneck".

if you're running a pair of drives in a RAID 0, that seems inline with other results in the HDtune thread.

One thing that may have an effect on speed is what stripe size you're using and whether you're short-stroking the drives.

..a

Strip Size is 128K

And how do my mates load COD MW2 faster tahn me when they have 1 drive and im in raid
We have same cpus and simalar mobos and gpus
They have 4gb ram whereas i have 2

Is my ram slowing down my loading times

those results look pretty good for 2 drives in raid 0

I apologize if I'm coming off as a bit brusque, I don't intend to.

AMD's SB750's tested bandwidth (according to Tom's Hardware's ICH10R, SB750, and 780a shootout) is 230MB/s. Note, this was done using SSDs so the numbers will be a bit more than a traditional HDD.

the averages of read and write speeds are also in line with what your HDtune is reporting.

that's why I fail to see why there's a bottleneck. Under ideal conditions using SSDs the transfer rate averages are only about about 200MB/s. you aren't using SSDs.

Ahh ok
Thnx firestorm
Looks like Eflyguy was way off
So is the reason i cant load as quick in MW2 is my mates cos of my ram?

also, I kinda forgot to post up the Maxtor's bandwidth as well

which is probably what elfguy is getting at, and is very valid.

but according to the datasheet on their 500GB model (go to pg 12), the sustained throughput is only 125 MB/s max.

if anything, each part in your setup may very well be running at the edge of its capacity.

and the ram could very well be a part of it, however. I'm not that well informed about RAM and its effects on speed (all my knowledge in that area is from the DDR1 days haha).

Dont quite get what ur saying
Can you rephrase please?

You should get more RAM regardless of load times

Especially now, while DDR2's still affordable and you can still find performance sticks.
(Unless you want to upgrade soon, in which case you should hold out for DDR3)
Those severe dips in your HDTune graph indicate you are in dire need of disc defragmentation. Usually.

And yes your lack of RAM is a limitation.
Given your system specs and OS you will greatly benefit from additional RAM.

elfguy may have been expecting the drives to perform better than they actually did, and that's probably why he said your controller is slowing them down.

the sustained bandwidth that Maxtor says their 500gb line can do is 125MB/s
which is close enough with what HD Tune says is the burst speed of your array (~127 MB/s), which makes sense as that will be limited first by the HDD's maximums and then capability of the controller.

as for effect of different RAM, I dunno
