i wanna check why my macbook kept idling around 60c, so i took it apart and this is what i saw.

are all laptops like this? or just apple, or did i just get unlucky with a lazyunaware assembly line employee. if they are all like this i'm taking apart my mom's air asap in the morning.

Most laptops come with crappy TIM applications. Unless you order specialty and get a repaste. Even then you still might want to do it your self

I remember specifically a few years ago on this very site, an apple certified tech posted some photos of apple's express directions for how to paste their macbooks.

It read something along the line of "apply one entire tube (photo of standard size arctic silver ceramique tube) of white thermal interface material to each of the following locations (locations shown in picture form)".

At least they don't cheap out... technically... I suppose

it certainly looks like they used an entire tube. it took me so long to clean that the alcohol wipe even dried up, i had to open up a 2nd pack to finish the job.

used a mini rice grain since this is a laptop cpu not a full fledge desktop cpu. now my fan spins at 2000rpm instead of 2550rpm at 60c, definitely more quiet, i'm still trying to find my lowest idle temp right now.

What you show actually seems very good to me.

I assume the workers aren't given any time to do things perfect so there's a good chance to beat their work even though you won't have their practice just because you'll have infinite time in comparison.

sorry i think i was a bit harsh on the assembly worker, perhaps i should have assumed he/she was simply unaware of how much tim to properly apply.

i highly doubt time is a issue, since it probably takes more time to smear an entire tube onto the chipset than squeeze a little rice size.

and it took me 2 seconds to do each chipset. i never worked on an assembly line putting paste on chipsets but i'm sure they have at least 2 seconds to do each chipset.

They are all like that. Every single Apple I have ever taken apart have been like that. Normally it is fine.

hmm perhaps the margin of improvement wasn't as big as i thought, i have since taken it apart twice to add more thermal paste. temp wise i manage to drop it by 5c on a good day, but the fan definitely dropped by 500rpm, so at least now its more quiet.

i guess there is no way around this, looks like i'm gonna have to upgrade soon, can't even run chrome without this thing becoming an oven on my desk lol

Grab Macs Fan Control and use that to up the fan speed.
