I'm about to engage in a conversation of a rather... touchy subject (it's not 4chan, just to clarify), and I'd like to hide my usual identity. The discussion has to do with religion and a lot of philosophical baggage... I'm actually quite interested in all that but I don't want it to be directly associated with me and my ID. First of all I'd like to know if this is legal. I know it's sometimes frowned upon, but can I actually get into trouble in messing with my ISP or things like that?

Secondly, I'd like to know how it works in further detail. I downloaded Tor easily enough, but it seems to throw random IDs at me every time I post. This won't work because if I try and engage in a lengthy conversation people will quickly notice that my ID keeps changing. I've also tried FoxyProxy, but that one is a lot harder to setup.

All I really need is something that will give me a proxy, but let me keep it long enough to actually have a conversation. Then when I'm done I can remove the mask and go back to being my usual self. I'm usually against this kind of anonymity, I believe that you should feel comfortable standing behind what you say, but this is a special exception... I know some of the people on this board in real life and I can imagine things spiralling out of control if people over-react.

If it's a discussion that requires you to throw yourself behind a proxy, perhaps it's not a conversation that should occur.

Proxy use link anyway.

As far as I know, no you won't get in trouble with your ISP by using a proxy. In fact, it doesn't hide you from your ISP since your connection would still go from Home->ISP->Proxy->Site. The only difference is that the site would log your IP as the proxy's.

Likely your ID keeps changing because the proxy you're using changes your perceived IP address constantly. That would not be entirely unexpected, as most people who use proxy's want to leave as little a traceable footprint as possible. I honestly couldn't give you an answer on that one 100% as I've only ever dabbled in proxy usage myself, so sorry that I also can't recommend something that would fit your needs. Someone else here may be able to though.

Anyways, I hope I helped at least a bit. I also hope your debate doesn't get too out of control. Good luck

@ That Guy
I know I know, it's a gray area that I'm not too proud of.

I just remember the last time I debated my beliefs on the military online (necessary evil and all that), my sister got wind of it and complained for weeks. I'd rather not start something similar again.

If it's your sister you're worried about, how is a proxy going to help?

And if you really wanted to hide your IP, a proxy isn't the best idea. Tor would be the better option at that point, but OOTB Tor isn't that great, needs some configuring to get to the point where it's really good. But even OOTB it's better than any free proxies out there.

Tor changes your IP so much as that's what it is for. It's made to keep you moving so you are harder to trace. If you want a more "static" IP, you should go with a VPN with a static IP.

Well there could be things put into your agreement with your ISP but in general, no. Proxies are not illegal. What you do with them is no different than if you weren't using one.

I doubt the gang have much hacker skills... it's not like I want to hide from the FBI or anything. I just want to avoid RL drama.

As to how she finds out it usually it goes...

Comment on the group. RL friends see my ID, quickly identify me. Friend speaks to friend of my sister, who then rats me out. And then she shows up with comments like "if you join the military I will disown you." "But I wasn't planing on joining, I was just..." "DISOWN YOU." I acknowledge that proxies may be going a bit overboard... the easiest thing is to just bite my lip and ignore the discussion. I was just wondering if there was a way. Even if it is a gray area of the internet, it feels like one of those things you should know how to do, as a seasoned netizen, just in case.

I'm not sure that a proxy would change anything. It sounds more like you need a private/incognito window in your browser. I doubt the users can even see your IP, and if they could I don't see how they would trace it to you.

I with c9k, I don't think they can see your IP, and even if they could then it wouldn't point them to you directly. An IP doesn't say who the owner is ( other than ISP ), so there's no real way to identify who you are. If it's a matter of a forum name, then don't use the same forum name.
