Just completed the build of my sig rig. Runs nice and fast, but CPU temps through several monitoring utils and the BIOS show that my idle temps are 40-42 C. After only a few minutes or Prime95 the temps shot up to 57 and still rising. Are these considered "safe" temps? My cooler is a Freezer 64 Pro with Arctic Silver 5.

I would not be comfortable with those temps. Typically you don't want AMD's to get above 50-55c. Maybe reseat your heatsink. How much voltage to the cpu did you have? Whats the ambient temps? Do you have good case flow?

Everything is running at stock. Room temp is around 70 F. Case is a CM Centurion 5 with decent airflow (120mm exhaust + 80mm intake). I will try redoing the paste + HSF, though.

Yea My 9950 stock heatsink had mine around 40c idle and 50 load. You may need to try reseating it like previously stated.

I'm just wondering if that heatsink can handle a quad?

Are you using the stock heatsink that come with the cpu? Or the one in your sig?

I am using an aftermarket model - the Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro.

That is an ok cooler i guess...according to this link that heatsink would keep a 9650 cpu around 55 load so it may just be the heatsink isn't good enough for a 9850 since the 9650 is only a 95Watt and 9850 is 125Watt. I would suggest better case flow. Get a couple more fans in there, that will help at least a little.

Removed paste, reapplied, and reseated heatsink. No difference. How long does it take for Arctic Silver 5 to burn in?

About 24 hours. But as i stated before, those temps are the temps you will get because that heatsink is made for the 9650 which is a 95 watt and your 9850 is a 125 watt.

My Phenom gets up to 62 C and I don't think that is too high. 70 c would really be pushing it, but I don't see any problems with this temp. I looked around the net for some safe temps and they go as far as 55 to like upper 70s. I don't trust the upper 70 ones, but I still think that in the 60s isn't too bad.

EDIT: I found some documentation from AMD stating that 61 degrees is max safe temp. Now I assume that AMD has some pretty good engineering so some safety factor must be involved. I assume that anything in the high 70s to 80s is really bad and will shorten the processors life significantly. Anything below that should be fine I would say, but still degrade the life of the chip from say 10 years to 7 or 8 years.

Well you may have already checked this but is the thermal paste across all of the cpu because i have the stock amd 9850 be heat sink and overclocked to 3.0 ghz and the voltage over by 150 mv and doesnt go over 54 oc on full load
