Arma and Arma II

Any one play these games? I read some reviews and tried the Arma II demo, and they seem pretty awesome, but Arma II runs like crap on my sig rig which worries me.

Does Arma the original run well, and is it a pretty good game to get? I am thinking I might pick that up, and if I really enjoy it then grab Arma II, at least after I get a new vid card.

Or does that even matter? I was getting 20-30 fps with everything set to normal, which was kind of annoying. How does it run for everyone else? And what do you guys think of these games?

Arma 2 is One of the worst hungry games everrr...not sure about the first one
The first one runs really well. I own both. The thing is arma II has issues using SLI and crossfire. Many people on the BI Forum have found ways to fully utilise sli/CF.

Yes it's a really power hog (and the thing is it's only a Dx9 GAME). The built in benchmark on arma II will help you see improvement in your configs. Even with my sig rig I have a hard time because it wasn't programmed to handle more than 4 cores. The last patch fixed that issue (as well as the more than 2GB VRAM) issue.
i have arma 2 but my computers to crap to play it xD, just says not supported when it trys to load...

Interesting. Can you run the game with an 8600 gts? It was killing my 8800gt.

Are the gameplay and online community about the same for both games? Would I be better off just getting the first one because of the performance issues and such, or is ArmA II really a much better game?

Actually I am looking for Oblivion with assault rifles, and I already played STALKER and Fallout 3. I am hoping this will be my game.

It's a very complicated game and isn't meant for the regular person who likes shooters.

The game has the complexity of a modern flight simulator.

i prefer the in between of both, this is where Operation Flashpoint dragon rising lies. Although there isn't dedicated servers i still have lots of fun playing

Man, that's like the ONLY game that uber-pwns my 5870. I so want to play ARMA II with the view distance scale on 100%. A very awesome, strategic FPS.
Arma 2 played fine @ 1680x1050 maxed out for me... sort of having issues now that I switched to a 1920x1080 monitor, but I haven't had a chance to resolve them since I've been trading out a lot of parts and have had a ton of downtime.

One very important thing you probably didn't do was set your view distance to ~1000-1200m. Anything past that is overkill and really does a number on your system. Your rig can probably run normal to high with no AA and low AF. SLI another 8800GT and you'd probably be able to max it or come close.

As for the game itself, it's a lot of fun! Sadly, most of the multiplayer servers are coop vs. AI... If you find a good PvP server, it's a ball. I personally play a lot of Advance and Secure (a modified version of Hold) on the BMFsquad server.
The game runs alot better than the demo did for me. I run it on high/very high with 2xAA getting 25-35FPS. There are a lot of tweaks you can do to increase game performance.

Yeah - that's another thing to note. The demo runs quite a bit worse than the actual game...

Arma II is good, be preapred to put the hours in though, it's not a game you can dive into for 30mins. As noted above co-op vs AI can get a bit dull, the better modes allow you to have your own vehicles and control AI troops.

##Make sure your Heli pilot can fly##

I don't understand how it was killing your 8800GT. I was able to play the game on my backup rig (that has a socket 939 3800 X2 processor on it overclocked to 2.6 ghz + 2GB GB of DDR ram). The 8000GT is as strong as an angry Rhino (It's a shame that gpu can't be TRI-SLI'ed). I don't understand how you can't play the game. I'm using my 8600 GTS as my main gpu and my 7300 GT as my backup to run all 3 of my monitors when I play arma II.

Yes the community is the same. Matter of fact, by now 60% of the mods made for amra 1 have been ported over to arma II. Also, all the mods made fro flashpoint were ported over to arma 1 and now are ported over to arma II. It's almost like the flashpoint/arma/arma II series is a lego block. That's the main reason the community is so loyal to it. Because we can port over just about anything (we've even ported over arma 1 islands + buildings to arma II).

Stick with ArmaII. We in the flashpoint/arma/arma II community have done alot of mods with arma II. So you won't regret it (just take a look at Armaholic to see all the mods and things being worked on for the game). Also with the A.C.E. Advanced Combat Environment Mod 2 coming out, we all have been pissing on ourselves with anticipation). The ACE mod 1 for Arma 1 changed the game so much, it added so many features that everyone I knew that had arma 1 was playing with the ACE mod.

Maybe it was just the demo. Or Windows 7? Who knows...

I like what everyone has said here, I pretty much hate COD games, and complex hard to learn games are my specialty (I play eve online!) so I will most def be picking up ArmA II.

I got both, and merged them (well, with CAA1 if you will)

I love this.

I also strapped artillery canons to the C130 and set them so I could sit in them at any time..

It's the demo for sure... ArmA II runs a lot better now that I've switched to Win 7 from Vista. I lol'd at your eve online comment BTW - Just be sure to play through boot camp and maybe the single player a bit and you'll be ahead of most people who hop right into the multiplayer... nothing more annoying online than people taking the helos when they can't fly for crap

yea kinda sucks when that happens. My squad waited at least 15 minutes for a heli to show up, we played on a desert map that takes only 6-8 minutes to get from our base to the other base in a heli, but the guy didn't realize it wasn't a plane.. he flew straight.. :C

we got out of there just as (enemy) backup was rolling into the other side of the town
