Well I'd have to say aside from Voice over IP for games the biggest one is the advancement of physics in games. It's gotten better lately but still has a ways to go.
VoIP is like Ventrilo/Teamspeak/XLive where you can talk to people in the game instead of typing.

But just think of the Wii controller as v1.0 of this type of control. Think how far 3D graphics have come since the first Voodoo card, and try to apply the same trajectory to motion control. Combine good motion control with wraparound 3D glasses, and you've got consumer VR.
