ASRock X58 Extreme

I've been trying to go over all of the motherboard options around the $200 mark, and I keep coming back to this board (X58 Extreme).

Before I lay down the dough, I want to know the opinions of the guys that really know best (you).

Do any of you have the board? If so, how does it perform? Any problems? Etc.

What other boards would you recommend if not this one? (Needs Firewire to record music with a Firewire Audio Interface)

Do you have any specific demands? Personally I like the Gigabyte X58 UD3R as entry board, and it's a good overclocker too.
Firewire is a must (if the board has a Texas Instruments firewire chip, that's golden).
The external cmos reset is a nice touch to other boards (the gigabyte seems incredibly inconvenient in that respect since even the batter is hidden under the video card.).
Adequate PCI and PCI-E placement (at least room for one of each) if possible. I have a PCI sound card, and if I add in a UAD-2 card, I'll need a free PCI-E slot for that.
Good overclocking
STABLE (can't have problems when recording)
Good HDD benchmarks (dropouts are murder, HDDs have to be solid)

From the reviews, the ASrock looks like it's pretty nice. But, newegg reviews have a lot of RMAs on it... so I'm a little worried.

read the review above. It goes head to head with $400 motherboards. Msi has so many problems, Foxconn Bloodrage and Bloodrage GTI(basically same with bloodrage without waterblock, Nb dice pot and nb cooling fan). I owned all of the I7 motherboards.

I would say

1-) Asus P6T deluxe
2-) Foxconn Bloodrage
3-) Evga X58 SLI LE
4-) Asrock X58 Extreme
Of course chart is price-performance wise.

And gigabyte has Vdroop issue.

- The Asus looks quite nice, but it's expensive.
- The Bloodrage boards are missing firewire (meaning I'd need to buy another card to support it, which means I'll need 3 slots open in addition to SLI).
- The eVGA board sacrifices the PCI slot when using SLI (which means my X-FI card would be useless) and also blocks the PCI-E 1x slot no matter what. But, it's pretty, lol.
- The ASRock seems to be receiving good reviews again, but the recent wave of RMA's are freaking me out. The price is very obtainable though.

So, I guess my main concern is how much better the Asus board is compared to the ASRock. Does anyone know what chip they use for Firewire? If one uses a Texas Instruments chip, that might be the winner by default. (All firewire Audio Interfaces prefer those chips... otherwise I may run into compatibility issues, which will force me to buy a Firewire card as well).

(Oh, and thank's for the recommendations
)

i think the oc palm is an external overclocking device

I have the board, it goes head to head w/ some high end boards..except..its not a good overclocker, its OK, but I always BSOD at anything over 3.8GHZ.

Apparently the V2 removed the SAS drive (because it had problems too)
Edit: He also mentioned that it allows for 24Ghz of memory, get dual gigabit ethernet, and I read that it uses a VIA firewire chipset.... All good except for that VIA chipset. Then again, the board I'm using now has a VIA chip and it's doing ok. Time will tell.

It also turns out that the ASrock board also uses a VIA chip (VIA VT6330 to be exact). Note, the Asus uses a VIA VT6308, which I'm assuming is an earlier version :-/

The Bloodrage (not the GTI) has a T.I. TSB43AB22A chip (which is good), but it's even MORE expensive (I have a hard time justifying spending more on my mobo than my proc)

Hmmmmf, decisions decisions...
OK, I think it's settled. I just watched a video of the Sweetwater Creation Station being unboxed, and in it..... the Manual for an Asus P6T Deluxe V2. Surprise, Surprise...

So, that either means that they've tested that particular VIA Chip, or they have an firewire card installed.... we'll see.

EDIT: I found a second video. It looks like the firewire card is a mini, meaning it's not really needed (unless they're totally ******ed, but I think they know their stuff).

It's actually kinda creepy how close their rig is to what I came up with. The Processor, Motherboard, and CPU cooler are all what I was leaning towards.

The only difference being that I'll have much more potent video cards in mine, and I won't have a rack mounted case (at least not yet).
