is there a big difference between the 512 4870 and the 1GB?

Depends on what resolution you run. If your running games over 1440x900 .. get the 1gb version..

Not to mention the 1gb version will be MUCH more beneficial should you ever crossfire.
Depends on your resolution. As far as performance, it won't make a difference unless the texture size is fairly large, or the resolution is higher, to the point where the extra memory is required.

The clocks, and other specs would be identical.
Not for a 22" (assuming it is 1680*1050)

If you're running something with really large textures, like Crysis, it does.

This is correct.

For games like Crysis, every little thing makes a difference, since it is the only game that can bring a supercomputer to it's knees.
However, IMO, it doesn't warrant the increase in price at that resolution.

if you plan to ever upgrade to a higher res (like me) might wanna go for the 1gb one, besides, games are sure to make better and better use of more memory as they are developed.

Another good point. I understand that it costs more, but why would you want to unnecessarily limit yourself?

My fellow 4870 owner knows

1gb is the way to go. Unless your planning on playing older games. Then the 512 version would be identical.

if your playing crysis you should be going for a GTX 260.

For 22" lcd, 512 mb should be fine. If you plan to upgrade LCD soon, may get the 1GB. It is a 150w GPU so make sure your psu is able to handle it.

Why, when the 4870 has equal or better overall performance?

I only went with the 1gb as it was the same price (after rebate) than the ASUS. if not for that, I would have gotten the 512mb.
I just got it as it was £20 more then the 512.

its overall performance is debatable, but Crysis runs better on the Nvidia counterparts for sure.

With today's games, 1gb is almost not enough. Go with as much ram on your card as you can afford.

lol, what games are you playing?
Crysis != benchmark.
Crysis is a stress test, not a benchmark.

True, crysis is a glitchy, mess up engine that more stresses your cpu and gpu than your memory. Taking crysis out the the mix. Unless you are still playing on a 15 inch monitor at 1280x1024, you need more than 512mb to push out any decent fps in many titles today. Fear, a 2006 game, I remember I had to play on medium with my 512mb card and it sucked. Don't get me wrong, I'm not say everyone needs to get a rig and/or card to hold its own in crysis. But I am saying, many titles past 2007, to get a decent, enjoyable fps, that won't piss you off b/c it's not as smooth as intended to be. Someone would be doing themselves a favor by looking to get a 1gb card or more at this point. Just my opinion, people can buy any card they’d like as long as its ATI.

I would go for the 1Gb option
, except you're planning to play on low resolutions.

Get the 1GB. It's only $20 more than the $170 512mb version. And it will most certainly yield better performance overall.

Besides, at $190, it's even less than what Best Buy is still selling their stock-cooling 4850's for (rofl).
