I still can't get my motherboard to see PATA drives on the primary and secondary bus, but last night I figured I would at least do a few tweaks to see how this thing would OC.......

Figured I would start with the utility included by ASUS, the AIBooster.

After only a few minutes of experiementing with it, I set it to "30% overclock", restarted the system and checked it out.

3646.26!!!!!

It was stable, I don't have a lot of programs loaded to stress it right now (don't want to load everything just to have to redo it while I am troubleshooting this bus problem) but put a light load on it.

FSB was at 260.5 (so 1042 FSB), the memory was at 196mhz though, 4:3....voltage was only 1.27.

There's something wrong (besides the ******ed design) with the stock HSF, it idles at 55c at stock settings, but it only went up 6 degrees at this OC....idleing at 61c

Hot for an idle I know, but since it's a stock HSF and I plan to replace it after I get the HDs worked out, I'm more interested in the percentage increase than the actual tempeture.

Am I missing something?

Is this utility THAT good? I know that memory should be higher, but still........

And yes, I did check it with CPU-Z....and it confirmed the AIBooster's readings were accurate.

???? AI booster sucked major with my 4400+, it wouldn't even do a 10% OC...i had to do everything manually. i still would choose manual if i had the choice again, but whatever floats your boat man......software utilities tend to be buggy/unstable, but if it works for you, go for it.....

Manually overclocking is the best option, though the AIBooster isn't a bad tool to start with. A 30% OC is certainly solid, though until you put a heavy load on it, you can't consider the system stable. Anyway, fiddle around with AIBooster to start feeling out the capabilities of your system, but once you solve your IDE issue (check to make sure you don't have your IDE channels set to RAID mode) and get serious about overclocking, ditch the software and tweak your settings manually.

(Yeah, I plan to dive deep into the IDE problem this weekend, if I can't solve it, I'll likely just buy a 80GB SATA drive for my OS drive and just save the PATA 120GB for a backup 478 system I am building)

I'll probably load Civ 4 tonight and test the CPU and the video card at the same time, at least a little. I don't want to load it too much with this stock HSF on there, but if I have to drop $60 for a new hard drive, there goes my budget for my heatsink.

I plan to get a bigger case, this one

ASUS 3600 VENTO

and see if I can afford a reasonable water cooling set up in a few months........then I make an end run for 4Ghz
