Obviously they use a different interface but why? What are the advantages of one compared to the other? Will I notice anthing different?

Just wondering as I would like to purchase one for christmas.

The only difference between the Xonar D2 and D2X is the interface. Although I would recommend the D2X over the D2 as more and more manufacturers are cutting back on the amount of PCI slots they put on their motherboards.

I have no other use for the PCI slots.. Are they starting to produce motherboards with no PCI slots?

If I got the D2X. Would there be a chance of it not fitting due to the place of the RAM DIMM's on the Asus 780i Striker II. I seen these Asus cards are quite long.

There is a BIG difference in my book.
The D2X requires a floppy power connector from you PSU. Almost all PSUs come with it, but I find adding an extra wire like that to be a big pain in the ass to route.

So that's what you'd consider a big difference? lol

Yeah they're exactly the same regarding quality and features. It all comes down to which interface would work better in your system.

yeah - it was a massive factor in my case. I've used up every cable from my PSU, and I really had to stretch 1 wire to reach. If I couldn't do that, I wouldn't have gotten the D2X. I really am not the kind of person to start stripping wires and soldering longer ones. Nor was I going to spend like $5 and wait an entire week for an extension

Like has already been said.

The only difference is the interface and therefore as PCI-E cannot provide the needed power, a power connector is required.
