Disclosure:-

The board is supplied to me by ASUS as a sample, it is a full retail sample from what I can tell. I have had the motherboard since early March 2019. Due to unforeseen circumstances I did not get to use it until recently.

Nothing has been stated to me on what I can or can not do with it, say about it, etc. Any thing by me within this thread are my own opinions and shares as I would do if I had purchased the motherboard. OP is constructed as I wish plus on how the thread evolves/needs of it for my own and other fellow owners.

ASUS WMI

The ZEA still uses ITE8665E as it's Super IO chip. The ASUS WMI allows SW to access it without it being adversely affected, which could lead to fan header PWM issues, stuck monitoring data, etc. This solution only works if the SW accessing SIO uses ASUS WMI.

So far I have used HWiNFO and multiple instances of CPU-Z concurrently, without issues. Hoping to try more tests, etc and share info ASAP.

Intel AC 9260 (9260NGW)

At present I am reusing W10 install I had used on Zenith Extreme. I had uninstalled the Qualcomm Atheros drivers prior to firing OS up on Zenith Extreme Alpha. I had bugcode NDIS driver check IIRC, only way to gain access to OS was to disable the onboard Intel AC 9260 WiFi, install drivers from support USB in box, then re-enable AC 9260.

The drivers off of support USB worked poorly for me, I managed only to gain access to my mobile phone WiFi hotspot, only way to get better functionality was to install the latest drivers from Intel site.

Thoughts on Zenith Extreme Alpha coming from Zenith Extreme

The Zenith Extreme was the weightiest board I'd ever had, but the Alpha seems even more heavier. I did not have the time to weigh each board. I will weigh the ZE now, ZEA when remove it and update this section.

I had to do minimal changes to cable routing, only real change I had to make was the 2x 8pin CPU cables. Connection location is pretty much same, but as orientation differs I had to reroute cables due to that.

The mirror effect on the IO cover/OLED looks really nice IMO, gawped at it a while before firing her up for the first time :) . I don't think the OLED screen is any larger, but I reckon the text is improved on sizing and perhaps bolder than on ZE. Only use for me is how the Q-Codes at POST have some text with them and at times I will ref the CPU temp when don't have SW monitoring running in normal use. Even though it can be customised for logo, etc, I never really changed anything on it on ZE and don't think I will on ZEA.

Due to the larger VRM cooling solution on the the ZEA, I was unable to access the 2nd screw hole on top row, I still used a stand off on mobo tray.

Also due to the size of the VRM, the CPU socket, RAM slots, addon card slots have moved down the board and a slot has been lost plus 4 dual slot GPU would be an issue.

The changes are not an issue for me, I much prefer the meatier VRM for use with Threadripper :D . SOC phases have also increased from 3 to 4, improved components, besides being linked to passive cooling solution of chipset.

The ZEA uses 8 true phases over 16 power stages, it's like a doubled setup, but does not uses doublers.


Der8auer also has this great video on YT about the new setup and compared to a ZEA with doublers.


The ZEA has dual bios besides "Flashback" feature. Switching between bios chip is done via a push button on lower right of motherboard, the corresponding LED will be lit (just below CPU socket) to denote which chip is in use.

Both the ZE and ZEA had Foxconn sockets, I have had no issues with either board. On ZEA I even did not use the torque tool, but just used a normal T20 bit in screwdriver and tightened down each screw snug and system POST'ed 1st time without issues.

My TIM spread results

TIM I have always spread by hand using a strip cut from plastic card. Below is original EK TR block and Bykski A-Ryzen-ThV2-X when removed from ZE, AS5 was used. Reckon I could cut back on TIM amount used, currently been using ~4-5 times more bigger sized blob than on say AM4 CPU.


PMU Training menu

Besides access to the usual set of options to gain memory stability Threadripper allows tinkering with PMU training aka IMC training :) . See this post by Elmor for further info.

I transferred a 1950X to ZEA, which I've had since launch. I used the same RAM kit as on ZE, F4-3200C14Q-32GTZSW. I expected the same RAM MHz/timings to work with ease. Initially testing showed it did, as I spent more time rerunning tests I have found I needed to tinker with the PMU menu if I wanted to keep same RAM MHz/timings, below is currently what I'm using for 3400MHz C15 1T.

The PMU training options have been present on X399 since TR2 was launched.

FFE/DFE: http://emlab.uiuc.edu/ece546/Lect_27.pdf . Not clear what's a better combination of Enabled/Disabled, will depend on the board and modules used.

PMU Pattern Bits decides how many bits are used for the memory training pattern. A higher value (up to "A" = 10 in hex) will cause training to take longer, but also yield a better result. IIRC the default is 4.

Here is a link to an Imgur album showing the ~18hrs testing to validate the ZEA is capable of running same RAM MHz/timings as I did on ZE with same CPU/RAM. Order of images is first test at top, settings used txt on Pastebin.

After the tests of Kahru RAM Test on various POST methods of board I've done P95 v28.10b1 & v29.4b4 set to 8K 4096K 27GB. v28.10b1 ~7hrs, PWM check, v29.4b4 ~9hrs, PWM check, Y-Cruncher ~4hrs, PWM check, RB ~1hr, testing totalled ~25hrs continuous.

CPU: Threadripper 1950X

RAM: F4-3200C14Q-32GTZSW

GPU: Reference Radeon Vega 64

Storage: 1x Intel 660P 1TB NVME, 2x Crucial MX100 256GB SATA SSD, 2x 2TB SATA HDD

Cooling: Bykski A-Ryzen-ThV2-X, EK-FC Radeon Vega, 2x Magicool 360 G2 Slim radiators, 6x Artic Cooling F12 PWM, 1x Slient Wings 3 140mm 1000rpm, EK-XRES Revo 140 D5 PWM, Barrow fittings, EK ZMT 16/10, Mayhems XT-1 Clear concentrate ~20% with distilled water.

Case: Be Quiet Dark Base 900, removed front door and added mesh, top of chassis where it meet top panel any cutouts have been taped up so no back draft air from top rad fans re-enters case, top panel had plastic removed where mesh is to allow better air flow.

Power supply: Cooler Master V850

Other info: Used Arctic Silver 5 on CPU, evenly spread using plastic card by hand. The Bykski block has simple screw down mount, no springs, etc. The motherboard controls all fans/pump via UEFI profile, based on water temperature. Front rad fans are mounted on rad outer face as intakes. Top rad fans are mounted on rad inner face as exhaust. Each set of rad fans uses it's own 4 in 1 cable, powered by molex. Loop order is res/pump > GPU block > CPU block > Top rad > Front rad. Only RGB used is default board and CPU block non addressable 4 pin.

OS: Windows 10 Pro, Linux Mint v19


Quirk noted in UEFI 0207/0405

My board came with UEFI 0207 out of the box, I opted to install 0405 via flashback after initial POST of board. I had noted CB15 was giving higher score for multithread. Upon checking further I noted the CPU was sticking to 3.7GHz all cores boost for even loads it should not. Below image has same CPU/RAM on ZE UEFI 1701 compared to ZEA UEFI 0405/0207.


The work around that allows the Threadripper 1950X I have to work for boost frequencies on ZEA UEFI 0207/0405 as it should is to place CPU core voltage mode in offset mode/positive/auto, defaults to 0mV offset ref Turbo V in screenies.

UEFI Flashback
i) Rename flash filename as ZEA.CAP, copy to USB stick root.
ii) Make sure USB stick is in Flashback port (marked in red box below image)

iii) Press and hold the Flashback button (blue box, above image) ~5secs. Blue LED on the button will flash slow for a few seconds and quicken as it starts update process. At the end of process it will extinguish, you are ready to boot up. If the blue LED stays constant the UEFI file was not found on USB stick, so check USB stick is correct format and filename is correct.

Note: Flashback is hardware flash tool built onto mobo, you can even use this feature with no CPU/RAM/GPU, etc, only power to board.

1. I currently only use RGB which is on board plus a Bykski block. The block uses non addressable RGB. Board and block tested for at stock "Rainbow" and static "Red", so far no issues. I can't see me adding more RGB as this is more than ample for me.

2. I may have missed PME training, if you mean PMU training it is the IMC training (Integrated Memory Controller). IMO what settings you may need would depend on HW in use, targetted settings.

3. I don't run Aura all the time, I tend to set RGB as I'd like, uninstall it (well revert to OS image without it) and board remembers the settings I use. In the past when I tested certain profiles of RGB all will not be remembered by board, so the OS SW is needed for them to function. If this has changed I do not know. When I tested RGB profiles in the past on it was for another aspect. If I have time I will try again some tests.

My board does not remember RGB settings on addressable connections and RAM, It does remember of 5V and OoBoard rgb configurations even with S3+S5 settings.
I cannot boot my mobo if I set erp modes to anything else then S3+S5. In S3+S5 mode it always shutdows and perform "dual boot" untill it finally boots. I use S3+S5 to keep off all RGB when board in shut down.

Rencently I started to have issue that board does not boot until I pull battery complexly and reinsert it after some times. Not sure what is that all about.. It is just stuck on code 00. I see it happening on the new BIOS i never had this issue on the old one.

PMU training by default is set to Auto i tried to set it to Enable, but it does not have any additional affect.

I see flickering of RGB when i am playing a game or something .. I have 1000W PSU and 2080ti i wonder if I 'm pulling more then that which makes PSU uncomfortable ;-(

Edit:

One more issue i remember LiveDash sometimes just stops especially when heavy CPU load is involved. Restarts serveices in windows does not help. Only full cold PC restart bring LiveDash to live.

Sorry I don't have access to any addressable RGB items, nor RGB RAM, hopefully another owner can comment.

To have RGB off on shutdown I use setting:-

When system is in sleep, hibernate or soft off states [Aura Off]

Found on Advanced > Onboard Devices Configuration.

This "dual boot" maybe down to another issue. Perhaps share a UEFI settings txt and hardware being used. I have added in OP info on my system so gives better context for test data, etc I'm sharing.

I use a Cooler Master V850 for my setup, peak watts I've seen on my wall meter IIRC is ~750W if CPU & GPU OC'd when under high load. As decent power supplies are rated on PC side I am well within it's capabilities to function without issue. Perhaps gain a wall meter plug.

I do reference OLED on mobo at times, I have not noted it go off or have an issue. Currently it is set as it would be from factory, I have not installed any OS SW relating to it either. I added further test data, where rig had been under heavy load for over ~24hrs continuously.

I've added most of my thoughts on ZE vs ZEA in OP. So far in usage and performance seems the same, except VRM temps are improved. I've only had the fans on VRM come on once, did not even know they were on until saw the reading in HWINFO. I did capture a video of them which I will place in OP soon. All the did was come on momentarily and turn off again, this was with 3.9GHz OC on 1950X, loaded with P95.

UEFI is exactly the same besides some new options for things like controlling PSU fans which use the "Node" connector.

Could someone capture IOMMU groups and lstopo of this board with all populated PCIE devices, so we know what NUMA goes to which PCIE/RAM sticks?

Having been having trouble with IOMMU on ZEA. On Arch Linux and I left pc overnight and got a bunch of AMD-VI issues with callback being ignored (and page mapping). Checked for issues on my raid and 0 errors were reported. When looking for the device causing the error the above showed. This is worrisome to say the least. I chose to enable "iommu=soft" so the pci-e can be allocated by software.

Well i there is some issues with IOMMU..

Slot 1 is invisible to IOMMU ... i posted this already on asus forums and level 1. This board looks bad ;-(

i have put some cards into my PCIE slots, including my primary 2080ti in slot 1 and GR710 into slot 3.
For some reason i don’t see my primary graphic cards in any iommu groups. It also does not show up in my bios, not sure if those things are connected.
Card works perfect under windows and under linux, so ***?

Is this Asus issue ?

wow interesting ... my bios do not detect card in slot 1... is this cause it's 2080ti card or what?

does it mean cpu/motherboard is bad or what?

card works fine it gives output but does not show up in bios and in IOMMU groups.

I literally display this BIOS from my 2080ti and also it's there is linux/windows etc...

Is it asus or nvidia issue ? I belive they messed up completely bios, which does not talk correctly to nvidia card.

Dunno why your GPU is not seen in UEFI, may be an issue with ASUS or nVidia FW, dunno really.

I can not say if your HW has fault, when I transferred 1950X to ZEA I didn't even use torque tool, just hand tightened screws. Both ZE and ZEA had Foxconn sockets and both never an issue for screwing down, etc. I have read info on web condemning these sockets, my experience has differed.

From what I checked on my system it supports IOMMU and components are interacting as they should. If I have time this week will try some other stuff.

Your outputs in post 15 do contain GPUs.

exactly that's the issue it's not there in ubuntu 19 iommu (txt), it's not there in unraid (photo).

strange! I have no explanation for it.

Yesterday I did fresh install of Windows 10 Pro using 1903 iso and Linux Mint v19.1 (Tessa Cinnamon Edition). All updates installed to each, IIRC v5.1.8 kernel on LM. IOMMU grouping as posted before, when using Linux Mint v18.3 (Sylvia Cinnamon Edition, v5.1.8 kernel).

I can't see anything in txt that stands out to cause POST, other than perhaps it is CPU & RAM OC profile issue.

Reading your past posts to piece together specs:-

CPU: 1950X
RAM: F4-3600C16Q-GTZR
NVMe: SN720
GPU: RTX 2080 Ti, GT 710

3400MHz C14 I can encounter post issues if not enough SOC/VDIMM, so inclined to believe the issue of stuck/multiple POST is OC profile related.
