I made a thread earlier and people told me that at under $250 ATI is the way to go (even some Nvidia fanboys told me this!

). This got me into this topic: At what price range does Nvidia start to show better price/performance ratio than ATI, and what is the name of the GPU?

i think it more depends on what you are looking to do with the GPU...

pure gaming $250 sounds about right....

the 570/480/580 are all over that... they are normally a bit better per $$$ then there ATI equivalents

but if you do any type of video encoding...

Nvidia rules no matter what price range you are looking at...

thanks to cuda...

alot of video programs are now using cuda...

that is the main reason i went for Nvidia over ATI..

So pretty much, Nvidia for Image/Video editing, and ATI for gaming?

I wouldn't say that. Personally I think that both companies do a good job of pricing their products accordingly with performance in gaming. You often pay a very small premium for getting an nV card, but you also get hardware-accelerated physX capability and as mentioned a bit more non-gaming functionality with stuff like CUDA-based video encoding (although honestly you 'pay' a bit for the speed, as the video quality suffers a bit vs. the slower CPU-based encoding so it depends on what you'll be watching the video on ... you may or may not 'care' about this sacrifice).

Also, overclocking on nV GPU's tends to be quite a bit more hassle-free. ATI does a lot of annoying BS that gets in the way of OC'ing in my recent experiences.

I believe NVIDIA can lead in gaming experience because of PhysX. But AMD also capable handle Eyefinity with Single Card while NVIDIA need SLI to enable that.
The only thing I could see NVIDIA lead is at GTX 570 and Radeon HD 6970 range. 570 is cheaper but performs quite similar to HD 6970. But 570 also have PhysX which HD 6970 doesn't have. In Single monitor, GTX 570 gives you more than what HD 6970 can provide.
Other than that is where GTX 580 sits because AMD doesn't have solution at GTX 580 price range.

Below GTX570/HD6970, we can clearly see Radeon HD 6950 performs better than GTX 560 Ti. When go to even lower price, you can find Radeon HD 6850 beat GTX 550Ti by quit a margin although it only cost slightly higher.

Above GTX 570/Radeon HD 6990, GTX 590 is fighting hard with HD 6990.

Most of the time, in same price range, AMD Card is slightly faster than NVIDIA Solution. Their power consumption is better as well.
But NVIDIA is leading in GPGPU softwares. That's NVIDIA main advantage over AMD.
