Near identacle. You'll get alot of people posting with reviews using old drivers, but comparing my fps vs thier 5770 fps shows that with new drivers, I get basically 4870 fps. It wins some, it loses some.

i dont care about dx11 or eyeinfinity.
just want raw power.

That depends. The 4870 with 1 GB is on par with the 5770 but the 512 mb version of the 4870 will far fall behind the 5770 in graphics intensive games.

Since in the UK they cost the same and the HD 4870 is impossible to find in the UK anyway, add in the DX11/SM5 capability of the HD 5770 == HD 5770 > HD 4870.

Not completely, some games show the 4870 512mb and 4870 1024mb performing identically.

TBH, the 5770 is a better deal. It runs cooler, uses less power, and overclocks better. The only disadvantage to the 5770 at all is the 128-bit memory interface which gives it slower memory bandwidth but the fact that the 5770 scales so well in crossfire makes it a good card to have for now and then when prices drop you can get an insane performance boost from getting a second.

The 4870 slightly edges out the 5770 with 10.2 drivers. I benched both a couple weeks ago. Both 1GB.
You can get a 4890 for pretty cheap right now. consider that too.

The only thing to note is that 4870 results were from my 4870 x2 with crossfire disabled (as in no driver for it)

The 5770 by far.
At time of release they were identical in performance, now, with all the new drivers, the 5770 is more like a 4890 in terms of performance.

This is true and with the OC the card runs very smooth. (10.3 beta drivers that is)

At time of release 5770 was usually worse then 4870

This. OC'd 5770's can seem to hit 4890 stock, but stock for stock, not really that I've seen (would love to be wrong, seeing as I have a 5770 though)

The only reason a game will favor HD4870 is either mature drivers or games are memory bandwidth hungry.

Thats why I said graphics intensive games like crysis, bc2 etc. Once the 512 mb of vram runs out the 4870 performs like a 4850.
