ATI card help

I'm recommending an ATI card to a buddy of mine as an upgrade from his 8800GT. He is using a GA-P35-DS3L board so he only has the single pciex16 so I am think the sapphire 4850X2 would be a good upgrade for a single slot motherboard. It's also budget priced. Is there any reason the sapphire 4850X2 wouldn't be a good choice?

Yeah that or a 4870 would be fine. 4870 would be a bit cheaper but they are both good.
I'd get the 4870 for the sole reason that you won't run into dual GPU problems. Less hassle in the end.

performance wise, how does the 4870 1gb compare to the 4850X2??

I'm going to say in games that support CF, the 4850X2 will beat the 4870 by 40%.
Games that don't use CF, the 4870 will win.
Can his PSU handle a 4850X2?

Theyre fairly similar until you get to the really high resolutions. Also, the 4850x2 is GDDR3 where as the 4870 is GDDR5.
Look at this HIS 4870 1GB. Its got a good cooler on it, and its OC'd from the factory.

HIS Cards with ICEQ are ALWAYS worth the money, over reference.

I second the HIS HD4870 ICEQ4. :THUMB:

posted after you guys and didn't get to read til now

he has a 600W enermax psu, so I don't think that could handle the 4850X2 but can handle the single 4870. I like that HIS one you linked also, really nice! Thanks.

if your friend is only going to be running 1 card the 4870 is the best bang for the buck.
i believe their $160 upwards on the market now for the 512 vram versions.

what kind of games or 3d apps will he be running?

That HIS card has faster clock speed than the Asus card. And the cooler is awesome, and these cards do run hot, so a good cooler is a must. My XFX card has a decent cooler, but the fan is by far the loudest fan in my case.

Left4Dead, COD4, CODWaW, BF2, etc.
I'd say if he really wants to get his all outta one card 4870 1GB model, anything NON-referance, something with a reputable cooler outta the box, I'd still say HIS ICEQ4 but Im sure that Asus card out does reference for temps.

He'll like the card. Fast, cold, and it's UV reactive
