ATI Questions - Crossfire Problem?

hi guys, well I'm still new to the whole GFX cards coming in two's... So what i need to know is three things.

1: I have a 4870 512MB, I have flashed the BIOS of this card. Will if I then put a second card in with different BIOS fail and totally not work?

2: Can i have my 4870 & a 4870*2 in the same machine and get the maximum power out of it? as in will it work with a 4870 512MB and 4870*2 with 2GB. Will these two work together? and is there any other factors like will the 4870*2 only run like a single 4870 with 512MB of VRAM?

3. With my new monitor (Dell 3007WFP 30" @ 2560 * 1600), what sort of GFX will I need. I know atleast a 4870 *2 (either two 4870's or 4870*2, or two 4870*2's in crossfire?)

thanks, and appreciated.

1. Yes, it will work so long as they are both 4 series cards. The BIOS does not matter as long as CCC recognizes the card as a 4870.

2. A 4870x2 and 4870 in crossfire is basically Tri-Fire 4870's and yes, it will work fine. The 4870x2 will default to 512mb/core, making the total addressable memory space while in crossfire 512mb -- Keep in mind if you are playing at a resolution like 2650x1600, this will not be enough, and you should look into a 4870 1gb version if you wish to Tri-Fire it with a 4870x2.

3. With your new monitor (3007WFP @ 2650x1600) you'll want a 4870x2, Nvidia GTX295, or a SLi combination of dual GTX260s or ATi 4870 1gb cards.

There is also news on 4870 2gb version , i'm not sure if it gets any use from the extra gig without crossfire, but if you get 3 of those i think it will perform better than 4870 1gb+4870 2gb , since it will be 2gb/3 vs 1gb/3 , and for your resolution(which is really nice by the way) will matter, if you want to use AA and such.
Or get the newest beast from ATI, 2x-3x HD4890 ,which will be released on 9 of april, it's basically a higher clocked ,with better optimized shaders 4870. It Should overclock nicely , and once they fully optimize the drivers, it should show it's true potential.

I don't see the point of either of those configurations, as there is nothing in the gaming world that could take care of 3x4870 1gb, let alone a tri-fire 4890, and from the prelim reviews of the 4870 2gb, the difference in FPS even at 2650x1600 is only 1-2fps even in crossfire.

HHMM, well I still think Drakans idea of the 2GB 4870*2 & 4870 1GB is the best option. but.. Maybe I will wait till the 9th of april to see if price drop is big or not when the 4890 comes out..

rep's again for both
