I have successfully flashed my X850 PRO from 500/500 12 pipes to 520/540 16 pipes. I have used ATIToolls to determine that the stability threshhold is 547/571 so I feel that 520/540 should work out fine. I guess the XTPE uses chips which have been sorted out to take the 540/590 speeds with stability.
So if I can flash my PRO to an XT and get stability what is the difference of not just buying an XT in the first place, other than that extra $100?

Also can someone tell me what a safe temp range for my card? I have stock cooler and the max temp has been 79c to 80c with fan locked at 100% at 520/540 speeds under full load.

The difference? The promise of 16 pipes and higher clocks. Your temps are in a good range but I would suggest getting some aftermarket cooling if you plan on oc'ing anymore. This zalman is what I got and my temps are 32c idle and 55c load with as5.
