I have problems with azureus, my download speed fluctuates massively. One minute its download @ 200KB/s then the next its down to 20KB/s. I have opened up the relevant ports on my router, I've tried changing the port its now on 7991. Any ideas? Its really frustraighting....
Its almost all torrents, I've got utorrent aswel but I don't seem to get that good speed with that either. I use bearshare for P2P and get great speeds, I'm on a 2mb connection and with bearshare I get that or better. Its just torrents that I have a problem with.

All torrents is like that. Some seeders sucks with their upload bandwith anyway
It's not fun downloading something with seed/leech ratio of 1:15

yep. torrents are completley reliant upon upload speed of seeders so if one or two stop seeding and had good upload speed the overall download speed of the swarm can drop dramatically

Well Azureus is horrible client, try uTorrent or Bitcomet. Iv seen people with uTorrent download at speeds past 800kb/s.. or you can use BitComet and use my BC tweak

well, if you are downloading the file you are sharing it. The reason your speed varies is because people feed it to you at diffrent rates.

How come P2P is quicker? Sorry I've been using torrents for about 6months so I don't know alot, I've used P2P for everything until recently. I might give bit comet a try.

Torrents can be ALOT faster than P2P, provided you have a decent amount of seeds.

1- Which tracker are you using?
2- How many connections are you allowing the client to make?
3- Are you capping your upload speeds, or sharing between 50-70% of your upload bandwith?

I remember when I used to use BT ALOT (read: 150GB+ of transfer per month), I could hit 650KB/s on my 6.5Mbps connection... but always left upload @ 50KB/s.

EDIT: It's generally recommended to use ports above 35000... up to a max of 65xxx (I forget the last 3 digits)

If you are running service pack 2 you should also check to see if you are getting the tcpip 4226 error. In service pack 2 they reduced the amount of open tcpip ports down to 10 to stop the spread of certain viruses, however this also slows you torrent download speeds a lot. There is a patch out there that increases the amount of open tcpip connections to 50 instead of 10.
