Well it feels like an eternity since ive been here but i feel i have been neglecting my duties to our BOINC team

With work having kept me busy for so long i have not had time to even entertain using my PC for anything other than work related tasks. The last time i had any sort of gaming session was several months ago so my GTX 780 has sat doing not a lot

Since gaming has taken a back seat and my gpu is otherwise going to sit idle i figured why not do something constructive and get crunching again. Technology has progressed without me but i noticed the new gpus from Nvidia are quite powerful now and so i have purchased a nice new GTX1080 to update my PC. According to specs i see that the 1080 is far superior in performance to my old GTX780 and it seems to have massively improved power draw as well ( are there magic pixies at play here ?? )

With the above new gpu winging its way to me as i type im curious if anyone else has been using this gpu with Boinc and what results they were getting ?

Anyway it will be nice to get back into something other than work and maybe just maybe slip in a game or two now and then

It is a great GPU. I don't have a 1080, but I do have a pair of 1070s. The huge reduction in power usage along with the great performance, makes the Pascal cards great for BOINC.

The only things that it won't do well are MilkyWay and Prime GFN tasks. Those are double precision projects, and outside of some professional gear or an OG Titan/Titan Black, all of the NVIDIA cards since the 580 have had gimped fp64.

Welcome back to the team, and enjoy the new gear.

Two 1070's now that's just greedy

I saw the power specs and thought that can't can't be right, but it appears to be true and quite amazing, even from 780 to 1080 is a difference of 70w which is no small saving. I figured with summer coming and long run times id want it to run cool and quiet so i went with the EVGA 1080 Hybrid water & air cooled version. Its going to be interesting to see how it performs compared to old card

I should get it nice and ready for next BGB

Cheers TicToc

If you think two 1070's is greedy you should ask @BeerCan as to how many graphics cards he's running

Well damnnnnnn, my 780 is currently running same set and is taking approx 2300-2500 seconds so that's a massive difference

..... and yes i dread to think of how much hardware some of you fellas are running

Quite looking forward to this new gpu now

I put the evga hybrid cooler on a couple of my 1080's. It works very well and I think you will like it, I got some pretty good overclocks with that cooler and a custom bios.

Well the card has arrived and the computer had a clear out of dust ( about 2 years worth ), radiators re positioned and all clean again.

Doing another batch of Collatz now to see performance difference and they seem to be finishing between 600-700 seconds, which compared to 2300+ is amazing to me. The best part is how cool this thing is under load, 97% use and only 46c , truly amazed. I had a Kraken cooler on the 780 at one point and that worked well but this Hybrid cooler seems really good ( 23c idle 46c load ).

The card is nicely finished and works really well so far, i tested briefly with 3DMark Firestrike and more than doubled my previous score with the 780. I think when i upgrade to high res screen there will be no graphics issues

Should be good for the next BGB event

goto %programdata%\boinc\projects\boinc.thesonntags.com_collatz

edit both files below and add the lines i quoted and save restart boinc and you should see alot faster work unit once it starts a new one.
