Backup question

262 Views 6 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Raptors06
Well currently I have some LACIE external 750GB hard drive as a backup device for all my coursework, past photos, etc etc. All my valued, important information.

Now would it be a wise decision to always keep my beloved documents on here, or is there a more secure backup solution? I just don't want to wake up one day and see my grade 5 photos and stuff all gone

Just keep that HDD in good condition and you should be able to check the S.M.A.R.T. Status with programs like speedfan. Make sure it stays in good shape.

But.. There's lots of other ways you can do a backup.

You can keep files on another HDD in your computer. Just make sure S.M.A.R.T is enabled so you are aware of any chance of failure of the HDD.

Sometimes is what I do is burn them to DVD's and ask friends to keep hold of them. Or put them in a lockbox somewhere where I know there safe. A.K.A Off Site Backup.

There are also personal servers you can purchase that backup things in real time.

But I find that the external HDD is the easiest and best way of backup.

i'd get another drive, as a backup for that 750GB drive. in my experience it's always the drive you're relying on most that fails.

if you can, zip your coursework, and email it to yourself, burn other stuff to DVD and keep it away from your PC, etc.

The problem is there is over 500GB of stuff I have

but hay, thanks for the suggestions. I think I'll look into getting another external HDD, but up to now that is really the only good backup solution i take it?

i guess so.

does it HAVE to be external?

way i figure it, you can get an internal drive, use that in the rig. and with the external drive, you can take it and put it somewhere. like at your work, or your parent's work or somewhere away from your house, and leave it as an external, offsite drive

alternatively you could try uising RAID - the raid that protects your data

Meh I could use internal, but then it would be really tough to make my data portable.. which is one reason I use an external.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions though, I got a better picture of it now.

But what's this SMART thing some of you mentioned?

SMART goes through and scans your drive to make sure your drive is still operating within the preset parameters. Here's some additional information if you're interested.

EDIT - For what it's worth, I use an external drive as well as an internal drive. I set up a script to run on my HTPC and media server to back up changed data to a different internal hard drive and then weekly, it backs up everything to the external. The external I pull out of the firebox/lockbox and hook it up every Sunday night (just the arbitrary day it runs...). Just my two cents.
