Microsoft has confirmed that it is investigating a problem described as the "black screen of death", which affects its latest operating system.

The error means that users of Windows 7 see a totally black screen after logging on to the system.

The firm said it was looking into reports that suggest its latest security update, released on Tuesday 25 November, cause the problem.

Hey I know that one! Yea, it definitely is a pain in the neck, I got that a few times yesterday, plus a screen for startup repair that said I removed a hard drive/optical drive or something when I am repairing a standard image that had been working great before.
I have also recently experienced this using Windows XP. I assumed it was a damaged installation or driver problem but after reading this I can see it much more wider than just myself.
I had my laptop running XP and had spent a good two days doing college work for deadlines that week. Unfortunately I forgot to bring my backup external from home that week and when I booted up laptop on the wednesday the screen was black. My only option was to clean install Windows, this time I installed Windows 7. I lost everything for that week

Never heard of this, haven't run into it yet (just a few BSOD's for me so far lol).

None that I have experienced. My sig rig at home runs Vista mainly with Win 7 RC also. My family havn't reported anything from Vista so I can't vouch for that. As for the security update being the problem, I can agree with that. From my memory I performed the XP update and the following morning the black screen appeared.

Ever heard of taking out the hd and putting in another computer? Or getting a external enclosure? No way I would settle for that.

Also you could have just reinstalled and used a drive recovery program to get your stuff back. I have power data recovery and that can see 3 formats ago. As long as you don't write over the data it's there for awhile. In fact all your work is probably still there.

Imagine what the guys who write Mac commercials will do with this.
Hmm, never seen this on any of the 4 PCs in my place.

Not even a single blue-screen that I didn't cause.
I experienced this a few days ago on my laptop. Once, fortunately. Now my lappie is running fine.
I haven't ran into this problem. But I do have a bug where it says my copy of W7 isn't genuine even though it is. To solve the bug I go to CPanel->System and wait about 5 seconds, then it says it's genuine and I can close out of those windows. I have to do this every time I boot up. =\\
Never experienced this problem, may be just a bit of luck with me

Hmmm, this hasn't happened to me and I have 7 Ultimate 64 on two machines. Got some classic BSOD's though, RAM issue related though.

I've had this before, although I put it down to ATi drivers (a known bug that should have been fixed). Haven't had it on the retail, only on the RC and Beta.
my netbook has this problem whenever it resumes from hibernation. why I have done as much as I can to avoid hibernation on it.
Nope ... works fine, never had it. With Vista, 7 out of 10 boots were ..."Could not load your desktop".
