Been thinking about folding.

388 Views 17 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  Hueristic
Ive seen this folding stuff just about everywhere, And Im pretty sure I know why people fold and all that. Im thinking of giving it a shot, I've never even downloaded a client and don't know which one or what to even download..

Would it be worth it for me to try it out with my current setup?
Also does this run 24/7 or can I shut it off while I game? My PC is on 24/7.

Also is there just one OCN team or are there alot of teams under ocn, I know I probably coulda read some more in this sub forum but sometimes its just as easy to ask and I know alot of people like to lend that extra hand.

So, can someone help me get started?

You have a very nice setup.

What I recommend is for you to start with the systray client, because it is the easiest to install and less disruptive. If you use this client, I recommend marking the checkbox "Allow recepit of work assignments and return of greater than 10MB..." and type "-advmethods" under Additional client parameters...

Once you are familiar with the process, you can install the SMP client, which is much faster and gives more points.

Or, you can try the GPU clients wich are awesome, though more disruptive, since they are beta.

I have old computers from Dimension 8200 working with the systray client 24/7 and used for work on a daily basis. They just don't loose any performance while working with regular office applications.

Make sure you type your username and team number so you can track your contribution.

Yeah, I downloaded one and it asked for a username and team #
So where do I register my username, and I take it I need to find a team to join here on OCN.
I don't see many howto's in your forum stickied but if you want you can use some of the howto's in EVGAs forum.:
http://www.evga.com/forums/tt.asp?forumid=57

There are plenty of guides for different setups stickied.
JUST REMEMBER YOUR TEAM# for OCN is 37726
I am not trying to steal your member just pointing him to easy howto's

Use your forum name you don't need to register it with [email protected]

Which one did you download? You don't have to register just type any username that you want and the team # to 37726 (overclock.net's team number).

For a username you can basically use anything you want, I suggest forum name as you are already familiar with it as are we. For team put 37726 for OCN, I think the other team you are thinking about is OVN's internal teams competition.

I would suggest the GPU client. It's in the folding essentials thread as GPU2 at the top of this forum. I'd link but no cut and paste. It is easy to set up on one card and should be good for 7 to 8k points per day with 24/7 folding. Any more questions just ask and we will help

You guys are great, thanks.
Im going to give it a shot right now.

edit: Passkey?
username, you can type whatever you want, as a nickname. Check if it is not used here

For the team, you can use OCN's folding team number, which is 37726. Of course, you can fold also to the "default" team which is 0, or any other team you may want.

cool I think I got it going.

A couple more Questions while were here;
Can I fold with more than 1 pc in my home with the same nickname?
What do I use to fold with my GPU?
How do I know what im accomplishing, points? PPD? what do these mean, and is there like a master list for people folding under ocn that's updated daily that keeps track of this infos?

Thanks, oh and btw I am in progress of reading these stickied threads and all, its just alot of reading and Ive got 2 kids 2 1/2 yr old and 1yr old distracting me.. kind of hard to concentrate atm

I downloaded this one, System tray client installer with viewer and all I see is that thing spinning around, with this one Console client only zip file (with Windows-service-install option). I see the data being processed with a percentage.. is the one with the viewer going to tell me percentages or what?

Actually there are pretty good guides for each type of folding client on the [email protected] site now. http://folding.stanford.edu/English/Guide

You can fold on all your pc's just use the same username and team for each client.

Passkey is optional, but you would register for one at the [email protected] site, and they will email you it. I just started using a passkey, to allow registration at sites like pny's folding giveaways and such. However again its not necessary.

Kakaostats is a good site to monitor your progress. http://kakaostats.com/t.php?t=37726

So is EOC http://folding.extremeoverclocking.c...php?s=&t=37726

fahmon is a good program to monitor all your clients on your network http://www.fahmon.net/

Thanks for helping the cause, and the team
Have fun.

Yes, you can setup several computers / clients with the same username. Personnally, I have 5 computers with 6 clients using all the same username.

You can track your contribution using Kakaostats

Also, I recommend you download FAHMON. It lets you track PPD on every client that you have on the same network.

PS: PPD = points per day. Each project has a given number points per work unit. depending on how much it takes for your system to finish a work unit, you get points per day...

sweet, yeah I have my sig rig, a fileserver in the basement (tyan tiger with 2 amd 2000+ 1GB ram) that basically sits idle all day. Also My uncle recently gave me about 8 dell optiplex pc's all ranging from 500mhz to 933mhz 512 to 1Gb ram in each all running win2k, Would any of them be worth starting up?

Also I cant seem to find anythign about gpu folding on here, can someone point me in the right direction for that?

Thansk again and +REP for all who are helping.

If it is running, you should have a systray icon for the folding at home client. It is like a bunch of balloons in colors. you can rightclick on it, then select status, log file. It will show you a detailed log on the advance of your work unit.

You can also track the advance using FAHMON.

ok thanks, I've got to run out for a bit so bbl.
I really appreciate everyone's help.
I've been wanting to do this for quite some time and thought it'd be a bit harder.
Seams pretty straight forward though.
alrighty then, got it installed on 2 machines plus my gpu and got FahMon configured.
I've decided to use the console version, dunno just like it a bit better i guess.
total PPD is 6639.84 is that about right?
Any tips, tricks, etc?
