Been wondering...

Hi!

I am new to computer building and overclocking. I have been thinking about something as of late and was wondering if someone had the quick no nonsense answer (other than "yes!").

Recently bought the Gigabyte GA-M790XT-UD4P mobo. It came with the Realtek HD divers along with a Dolby "interface". With a setup like this, buying an after market sound card make any sense then?

I hope I am not hurting anyones feeling with my question. Just wondering since I have been considering getting a sound card. I just game (not online yet) and listen to some tunes from time to time. No audio editing or anything of the like... yet.

A dedicated sound card will have higher quality components, and higher quality sound.

If you only listen to music now and then and don't think it sounds bad, no harm keepingn the HD.

I have the same board.

If you are thinking of editing audio or listen to a lot of music, I highly recommend picking up a dedicated card.

While onboard sound has definitely made progress and sounds better than ever, their is no comparison between dedicated and onboard. With dedicated it just sounds soooo much better.

Its like comparing onboard intel graphics and a dedicated ati/nvidia card. The onboard graphics can do everyday stuff like internet, videos, and some games, either old or low settings. And new onboards are better than really old dedicated. But a modern dedicated card you could run games on max and enjoy it.

Makes sense... Check an Asus and some other card out (supposedly high end, forgot to write name down)... whew.... $129!!! I must start saving. I do like my games loud and with a lot of bass.
One word onboard sound - SUCK!

Get a dedicated sound card Like the Asus Xonar DX2 (damn good card I say).
You will notice a huge difference in the sound quality IF your speakers/headphones are up to it. If your using cheap ones you'll probaly not notice a lot of improvement.

I'm lucky and had a set of Klipsch Promedias from my old PC and was just blown away by the sound of my Asus xonar DX.

Then I stepped up my headphones from Audio Technica M-30's to ATH-A700's and was blown away again for both gaming and Music.

Ok... Ok... Ok... I like that description of OB sound.

THAT's the Asus I read a review on on Tweak Town. About $90. May consider it once I have a budget for that AND a nice pair of speakers. Anyone with experience with the Bose computer speakers? I am a Bose fan for home speakers and am wondering if on the computer they would be any good.

Klipsch... very nice. They make excellent home speakers as well (I am somewhat of a home music audiophile
). May look into them.

I am somewhat short of space in my desk area so I need to think small. Going component I can only think of 2.1 at most. Don't have the area to go 5.1, much less 7.1. So, I am thinking that the cards I am thinking about should/would have excellent spatialization qualities.

Spatialization = Make it seem like the sound is coming from all around you -or- simulated 5.1/7.1 setup.

So, I am thinking about these as a sound card option:

Asus Xonar Essence STX

Azuntech X-Fi Prelude

Speakers on standby for now. My cheap Altec Lansings will need to do for the moment.
Prelude. Great rock solid card. Great gaming card.

Asus? good for music, sucks for gaming.

Cheers,

My Xonar only supports up to EAX 2.0... but to be honest, that's enough for me. Anyway, I don't really use it anymore, it just runs optical out.
