Ok I have been overclocking my rig for a while now. Very conservative all together, going from 2.4-2.6 tops.

My main question is besides overclocking your video card, how much does overclocking the cpu and memory affect fps in games?

OC'ing the video card has obvious improvements (such as my card which i get an average 20 more frames from and oc.)

Still im not sure how much OC'ing the CPU and memory have on performance.

Any info?

Better loading times and improved all around performance.

That what im trying to figure out here, if the work put into cooling the cpu to get a higher overclock and buying overclocking memory is really worth it. The performance gains from OC'ing the vid card seem to be exponentially better than oc'ing the cpu. I can understand if it is used to squeeze every last fps out of your system but with all the money spent on cooling and wasted on high end ram, couldn't you just buy a better vid card?

Remember this is all from a gaming point of view.

Well the loading times will increase well, and so will boot times, and the game will run smoother, and if you have any lag in the beggining that will go away, most of it is due to the ram though, and you will see pretty much a significant amount of performance increase in everything in the game....depeneding on how much your overclocking

you ram should be fine for a decent overclock, only if your trying to push it to EXTREME limits
Whats the timings and the speed its running at
look in CPUz and post a screen shot

^^ exactly, I think of OCing as adding some pure N20 to my car's engine.

I've played with my OC for a long time.

Ram maxes at around 250-255/ 2.5-3-3-6

Mobo can go well beyond that.

Unfortunately my cpu does not like to go past 2.6 absolute max even with a higer vcore.

The real benifit from overclocking the CPU and Memory subsystem comes into play when the game has exotic physics algorithms. (F.E.A.R and HL2 Source for example) also games which are HUGE in scale (X3: Reunion or some MMP type stuff)
The GFX function is to render the scene.
The CPU, Memory, Drives function is to direct the scene.

Both are critical to a satisfying and tasty gaming experience, IMO.

OC'ing one particular part of the system often will reveal bottlenecks elsewhere in the system.

Also, hardware can only run as well as the software which it is running, some software (games) require more CPU 'horsepower' just because it is bloated and ill concieved to start with.

Hmmm but i still have yet to see a game that would slow down my game due to complicated physics algorithms except of course 3dmark but that is just benchmarking and has little to do with how well something plays a game. Even F.E.A.R. didn't see any slowdown when all of the CPU options were turned on. Tested it by lobbing grenades through a window into a room with lots of boxes in it and watching. Nothing.

Still have yet to play X3 though.

Where you will see a difference is at the Uber Cool parts of the game such as a KickA$$ firefight where there are a lot of PCs and NPCs and such. The grenade and boxes 'test' is not very accurate IMO. You may not tell any difference on todays game, tomorrows game may be a different story altogether.

Good point on that but as of now i dont really see the point with OC'ing my system for a while.

Getting myself the Epox 754pin SLI board and a 7800gt soon too. w00t!
