I'm in no hurry, I want to get the best hardware for the money.

I am looking at the sony Vaio SR right now.

Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor P8700 (2.53GHz)
Microsoft® Windows® 7 Professional 64bit
Classic Black
320GB SATA Hard Disk Drive (7200rpm)
4GB (2GBx2) DDR2-SDRAM-800
ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 4570 Graphics (512MB VRAM)
Fresh Start

that comes to $1119.99

Is there anything better out there?
Would it be likely that Sony and the other MFRs. may refresh their line before febuary 2010?

Studio XPS 13 has same CPU. 4GB DDR3 1066Mhz, LED screen, 500GB HDD @7200. Slot load optical drive. Oh and the 9500m hybred graphics crushes the 4570. 4570 lucky to do 3500 3DMark06 the DeLL does over 5000. $1199, link. You can get it with leather for $40.

I read about some heat and battery issues with the dell, I'm not looking to do supreme gaming on this, but maybe some casual FPSing now and again.

You're always going to read about "some heat and battery" issues with every laptop. As long as you use the laptop in a setting with sufficient ventilation to the system, you shouldn't run into any heat issues. Battery issues, well, there's only a couple of major cell manufacturers out there. Bad cells will affect more than just a single computer manufacturer.

I'd personally upgrade to an on-site warranty with the Dell and go with that instead of the Sony. General support, even downloads, has been easier and better with Dell over Sony.

I have the DSXPS 13.4"..and it is great. My specs are:
P8800
G210M
500gb 7200rpm
4 GB ram 1066mhz
Windows 7
Leather Accent

It is a really nice laptop and suits what I need. In terms of battery and heat, if your gaming people usually keep the laptop plugged in so battery is not a problem and it's difficult to game on your lap so heating is not an issue either
I personally, like this laptop a lot and for general use the battery and heating is not a problem either. In fact, I don't even see issues with heating when I play games..The A11 bios was a good upgrade along with win7 support. That's just my 2 cents, plus the keyboard is back-lit
Another thing, some people say that it's "heavy" but I'm no Olympic body builder or anything and I find the laptop really light especially over my previous Dell xps 15.4"

Good luck with your decision,
Wasbo

Only casual gaming? How about a Thinkpad? Lenovo is having a sale right now. ThinkPads are really the greatest laptops out there in terms of durability and functionality. If you can deal with the Intel graphics, go with the X series, which is the smallest and most portable (12-13" screens). The T series is a little less portable (14-15" screens), but offers moderately decent ATI chips.

Second this.

Oh and when choosing laptops the least important aspect is the hardware.

You want to look at ergonomics, screen size, battery life and weight.

Which is why I went with the T400. You can't beat the trackpoint, a 14" 1440x900 screen in a body that is only scarcely larger than a Macbook and weighs under 5lbs, and 6 hours of battery life.

You can get a T400 with a P8700, 4GB DDR3. 14" 1440x900 LED backlit screen, and a 9 cell battery for $955 right now. It has switchable graphics so you can switch from 4500M to HD 3470 without having to restart if you need the extra power.

Oh and you're looking at around 9 hours of battery life at 60% brightness. (The VAIO you're looking at will probably do 3-4 hours tops)

Oh and a second on the X200. I tried one out instore and I wish I could have afforded one when I got my T400. You can probably get one for under $1200.
