I'm looking to put together a new rig based around a 1366 i7 chip toward the end of the year around Christmas time.
I'm running a 775 chip at present, and I was wondering what experiences you've all had with the new ranges of air coolers for 1366.
I'm probably gonna be fiddling with over clocking a little but not to the point where I'm going to need to liquid cool heavily.
Any reccomendations for a good and solid air cooler? I've read a few reviews but I'm still undecided so I'd rather look for some advice from people here.
IFX 14 from Thermalright always gets forgotten, but if you have the space for it (massive!), it's one of the top out there (frequently beating Megahalems, TRUE, and the rest for air).
I would go with Either The Noctua nH-D14, The True ultra 120 extreme or the megahalems. I would stick to those three. Imho I would go with the Noctua because it was proven to beat the Ultra and the Mega. but your choice
I second the ThermalRight IFX-14.. I run a lapped IFX-14 and single 120mm fan on an overclocked i7 920 @ 3.85GHz w/HT on at 1.3250vCore, and I never see core temps above 65C under full load/stress. Looking to get a single 140mm fan soon.
I haven't seen the NH-D14 from Noctua before, but since it looks a lot like IFX-14, then it should be a similar performer. Expensive in comparison, though.
You will get the same answers from everyone and all of their answers have been collected in my guide. PLEASE read it and it will answer most all of your questions. 1st link in my sig or up top with the rest of the stickies.
Judging on preliminary review's the new Noctua NH-D14 is the best. The downside is it's freaking massive, heavy and cannot be used with higher profile ram (i.e. Corsair Dominators or similar). Of all the high end cooler's it's much better value than people realise, as you get 2 high quality fans and Noctua's quality thermal paste bundled in (although the fans are too low in RPM for some people).
Aside from that it's the Megahalem to go for. I know some people say the IFX-14 is better (when used in a 3 fan configuration), but from the reading I've done it's marginal at best.
for room and noise sake, get a h50 if you want noise and a tad better cooling get a higher priced aircooler with some noisy fans, that you have to jingle around if you have decent ram

in order to get the lowest temps with the h50 you have to reverse the exhaust fan, and this is generally a bad idea for most systems, you'll typically end up sucking the GPUs exhaust back in and not to mention it increases the chances of hot pockets.
