Best card for multi-monitor support

1774 Views 31 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  Chunky_Chimp
Hey guys, I was wondering what the best card (or setup of multiple cards) was for anywhere from three to six 24inch or 30inch monitors. This will be used as a trading setup and I have no prior experience with multi-monitor setups. I was thinking about grabbing a couple of Radeon 5770's. Any other suggestions?

2x 5770 will do ya great.
They perform about the same (beats it sometimes) as a 5870.
They are cheaper too.

5850 would also suit you well.

If you want to run up to 6 monitors, you will probably need to look into Matrox TripleHead2Go (Linky).
Either that, or you will need to run 3 video cards.
5850 or 5870 for sure. EYEFINITY FTW!

Check your rep count.

CF 5770s scale very well. 2x will bag you better performance then a 5870 for a minimum savings of $70.

Using Eyefinity a single Radeon 5000 card can support three monitors. HOWEVER when you run two cards in Crossfire you do NOT get six outputs, just three. You need to have two Radeon 5000 cards running separately in order to get six outputs.

I was under the impression that you couldnt CFX with multiple monitors. Anyway if that is the case then that is fine. If they are running off of 2 separate GPUs (3 monitors on each card) would I have 2 separate desktops or how in the hell would that work lol?

Ummm... I am maybe wrong but does Eyefinity support Crossfire? I don't think so, I don't have Dx11 card yet. But I think it doesn't support Crossfire yet.

Would there be any complications with doing it like this? This is the setup that seems the easiest.

5770's support 6 monitors each.
I don't think 2 of them support 12. haha.
6 should be fine. Right?

You can plug up all the monitors into one card and it will still work fine.

You would just have the one desktop. The only difference is that in games you will only be playing off one card instead of having them work together in crossfire.

They only have 3 outputs each, 1 DVI shares the HDMI port if I understand it correctly, so I would need 2x 5000 series cards since 2x3ports=6 monitors right? Anyway about Eyefinity, I want the desktop to be on the center screen and from what I've read about Eyefinity your desktop would be on the bottom left screen. Is there any way to adjust this?

I won't be gaming on this machine, I just would like a card powerful enough to never lag.

I believe you can adjust it however you want it, though I haven't messed with an Eyefinity setup so I'm not sure.

There should be no trouble running two 5770s not in CrossFire. Hell, as long as you have Windows 7 you can run any two graphics cards, period, as long as there aren't any driver conflicts. In Vista they have to be the same brand and series.

My 5770 has 2x DVI ports, 1x HDMI, and 1x Display Port.
You hook up 3 monitors in the display port.
Total of 6 monitors on the card in EyeFinity.

There are EyeFinity options that you can adjust to move around which monitor does which.
(Like which is the center, right, left, top, bottom, etc)

What I suggest is buying a main card, then a cheap card to run the other monitors. With any two cards you'll be able to run 4 monitors at least, since video cards generally have two DVI outputs.

In your case you probably wouldn't want to enable eyefinity at all. Just use plain old extended desktop.

Also to clarify, the 5770 can NOT run 6 monitors alone. It just doesn't have the connectors for it. There is some confusion about this since the eyefinity tech can run 6 monitors off one card. The card would still need 6 outputs for that, the 5770 doesn't have them.

Okay cool.

The 5770 still seems like a pretty good choice, what do you guys think? Can you run 3 monitors* NOT in Eyefinity mode with the 5770?

i really don't care for the multihead adapters you run into not being able to use a lot of resolutions... specifically even with the TRIPLE HEAD you can only use 2 x 1920 x 1200 monitors... so this would be a deal breaker for me...

i would assume that buying 6 24-30 inch LCDs means you have some money to burn... why not make it 8 screens...

and get two of these monsters... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814195086 with FOUR DVI/HDMI EACH

or just get a 4 or 6 PCI-eX16 2.0 slot board and use a bunch of 2 port cards... i doubt your trading software is going to be that demanding on your videocards...
